We go through the entire catalog, even looking at buildings which we have no practical need for.

“You know,” I say, resting my head against his shoulder as we sit on the back of my car. “Some of these prefab houses are bigger than my quarters at the temporary dwelling in Touchdown.”

“I can say the same for my quarters.” He chuckles softly, rumbling my face with the sound. “Maybe I should order a prefab house and put it up here.”

“Maybe we should do that,” I say. “Maybe we should go house shopping together. What do you think?”

He opens his mouth to reply. Have I pushed things too far, too fast? Or will he go for this idea?

I’m sure his neighbors will appreciate not having to hear us every night that ends in y.

Yarvok

The next day we awake early and head out for some house shopping. Of course, by head out, I mean we go to the warehouse and examine what they have in stock.

The holograms are nice, but they only show the exterior. We want a walk through of the interior before we take the plunge and buy one of the prefab dwellings.

As soon as we walk into the warehouse, a Shorcu salesman attaches himself to us at the hip. His shiny suit means he probably works on commission, and he is probably used to getting a high commission at that. I remind myself to be wary.

But it turns out that I barely get to do much talking at all. Olivia speaks to the salesman as if it’s all she’s ever known. I guess coming from her wealthy background she’s quite used to dealing with people like him. They seem to get along famously, that’s for certain.

“You know,” the salesman croons “the deluxe model of this prefab dwelling includes a downstairs half bath and a sun room.”

“Ooh, a sun room?” Olivia grins. “That sounds nice. Can you show us?”

I realize that she’s going to go with the most premium and deluxe of everything. I know it’s not my money she’s spending, but that only makes me feel even worse about the whole affair. She’s spending a lot of money, but at the end of the day I can’t fault her logic.

It’s like when you need to buy a new pair of boots. Sure, you can go with the cheapest pair you can find on the holo net. But if you go that route, you’ll quickly find that you get what you pay for.

Your new boots will fall apart on you quickly, and you’ll have to go buy another pair. If you get the cheapest pair again, you’ll wind up buying four or five pair of boots new every year.

On the other hand, if you spend money on a premium boot, it lasts much longer. you won’t have to replace your boots nearly as often, and in the end this saves you money even if the good pair costs five times as much as the cheaper pair.

If we were to buy only the cheapest of the available pre fab houses, we would grow to regret it in the future. So I can’t argue with her at all, but it does make me anxious to see her pouring money like it was water.

While our shorcu salesman goes off to set up one of the deluxe prefab houses for our perusal, we wait in the comfortably appointed lobby. I get us each a cup of coffee from the small pot in the corner.

“Well, well, well.”

I look over from Olivia to see a familiar face has entered the lobby. Chadd Gordo.

“So the rumors are true. You went and seduced an heiress so you could fund your little operation.” Gordo sneers.

“That is not why Olivia and I are together,” I growl.

“Yeah, that’s what they all say.” He turns to Olivia and grins. “Hey, baby, you know what they say about Vakutans. They only have big ‘guns’ on the battlefield.”

Rage boils up inside of me, but Olivia puts her hand on my knee and squeezes gently. I manage to hold myself in check. Barely.

“Oh,” he says mockingly. “Did I touch a nerve? Well, let me say this too then. There’s no way that a Vakutan is better in bed than a fratvoyan. Would you like to know why?”

“Not particularly,” Olivia says cooly, trying to act nonplussed.

“Because all a Vakutan ever thinks about is war and fighting,” Chadd says “And all that a Fratvoyan ever thinks about is sweet pussy like yours.”

Gasps go around the lobby, and everyone turns to me to see if I’m going to rip the little furry bastard’s head off or not.
