“And we’re still us.”

She sighed. I could see the frustration. But I didn’t know what answer she wanted to hear.

“Abs, we’re going to make this work. We’ll make time for each other. I can rearrange some things. If I have to eat dinner at the diner every night so we can see each other, I will.”

“Yeah?”

“It will work.”

“Are you sure you want it to?”

I tensed for a moment. “What do you mean?”

“You don’t do relationships. I’ve known that as long as I’ve known you, and this, this feels...” She chewed her bottom lip for a moment, like she was afraid to spit out the wordrelationship.

“I didn’t do relationships with other women. You want to know why?”

“Because work came first.”

“No...” I put my hand around hers. “Because they weren’t you, Abs. Every single one of them wasn’t you, and were never, ever anywhere close to you.”

She searched my eyes, her eyes widening as she saw the truth in mine. I’d meant every word I just said. “You’re serious?”

“Completely. This will work. We just have to get out of our own way.”

She giggled. “We’re good at that, though…”

“I think we’re good at a lot of things…” I grinned, leaning forward and pulling the coffee mug out of her hand, setting it on the night stand.

I loved her giggle, I loved the way her eyes lit up, sparking in a way I’d never seen when I touched her, when I kissed her. The way she touched me…I just loved her, all of her.

We’d decided on a lazy day. I’d checked my messages and sent Gerda a Merry Christmas. She sent a photo of herself in front of the Christmas tree with her tour group.

Lucas leaned over at my smile. “She looks familiar.”

“She was my partner at the bartending class.”

“Ah…”

I looked up. “I’m going to meet her for a coffee before she leaves the island.”

“Running off already?”

“Ha. No. Just want to wish her a Merry Christmas in person. You can come along if you want.”

“I’ll tag along, but I may take off. I have a few errands to run.”

“What sort of errands?” I asked, searching his face for any hint, but there was none.

“You’ll see later.” He leaned over and kissed my cheek, his stubble tickling me. “See when she’s free and we’ll get ready to go.”

Gerda was waiting with a table by the window. She waved excitedly as I walked in, Lucas behind me. “Hello…”

“Hi, Merry Christmas,” I greeted as she gave me a warm hug.
