“Merry Christmas,” she said, glancing at Lucas. “I can grab another chair…”

“I can’t stay, have a few last errands to run for the holiday, but wanted to make sure you two met up.”

“We’re good.” I kissed his cheek.

“I’ll grab you ladies some coffee…”

I settled in at the table, and she smiled at me. “Just friends no more?”

I giggled, blushing a little. “Christmas miracle.”

“Good, I’m glad.” She smiled.

Lucas reappeared, setting down two coffees and a box of cookies. “You have fun, I’ll see you later.”

“I’ll text you,” I said.

Soon he was gone and we were on our own. I moved my coffee closer and opened the box of treats he’d picked up. The aroma of freshly baked cookies wafted strongly towards me and I took a shortbread out, setting in on the napkin in front of me.

“I have a little something for you…” she said, opening her purse up. “Now, it may seem funny, but I bought one for me and my husband, too. They have an old custom here, there’s a bridge…” She handed me a little box with a bow on it.

I lifted it up to see a lock.

“You put the lock on the bridge, it’s a symbol of your love. I thought if you didn’t get a little Christmas magic quite yet, you could always keep it for your return trip.”

“That’s so sweet of you, thank you.”

She smiled warmly at me.

“I saw the way you two look at each other, even at the distillery on the tour and now…it’s a lasting love.” She picked up her coffee as I set a couple of cookies in front of her. “What do you have planned for the rest of your time here?”

I picked up my second cookie from my napkin. “Playing it by ear. It’s kind of nice to have the time be our own.”

“Enjoy it. Every moment. Time passes so fast.”

“Merry Christmas, baby.”

I opened my eyes halfway and had to keep blinking to get them to eventually stay open. There was Lucas with the Santa hat on his head, leaning over me.

I couldn’t help the sleepy smile as I looked up at him. A girl could get used to waking up to that sight every Christmas…

“About time,” he said with a grin.

I batted at his Santa hat. “What are you talking about?”

“Santa stopped by last night.” He shrugged and sat on the edge of the bed, holding out a mug of steaming coffee. I inhaled deeply, sitting up partially in bed to take the mug from him.

The first sip was amazing, like it spoke straight to my soul.

I glanced up to see Lucas watching me. I blushed. I wasn’t used to this...whatever this was. Days in, and I still wasn’t used to it. It was like living in a dream, beyond anything I’d have ever let myself imagine.

To have him looking at me that way.

To waking up in his bed.
