I laughed against his lips, drawing him closer, when his phone rang.

I recognized his ringtone.

He groaned.

“Your mom has impeccable timing.”

“Perfect,” he groaned, moving away to answer the phone. “Absolutely perfect…” he muttered.

I left Lucas in the kitchen, making up another charcuterie board to get us through to dinner later on while he spoke to his mom on speaker. I wished her a Merry Christmas before heading back into my bedroom and closed the door partway behind me.

I’d forgotten one of the presents for his stocking.

When we’d been walking through the market, I’d heard about the love sculpture from a couple of women in front of me in line when I’d bought the hats. I’d gotten the info from then and then bought one myself.

I wanted to do something special, and it had seemed like the perfect gift. I brought out the little wrapped box and headed downstairs. He wasn’t talking, so his conversation must have ended.

I went into the kitchen, tucking the small box behind my back.

“What are you up to?”

I came back and stood beside him, holding my hand out with the little box balanced on top. “You’ll just have to open and see.”

His eyes narrowed as he lifted the box up. He ripped through the paper, then lifted the lid. He looked at the lock and key and glanced back at me. “What am I missing? Did you rent us a bike or something?”

”Actually, it’s a gift from Gerda. She thought it would be good luck.”

“I love it. And it has brought us good luck…” He leaned forward and kissed the tip of my nose. “And we have time.”

“We have the entire day tomorrow,” I said, wrapping my arms around him. “Today is all about us and staying here…”

I curled up beside Lucas on the couch in front of the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree. His arm wrapped around me, I leaned against his chest. “I still can’t believe you did all that.”

“Santa did all that.”

“Right. Santa.”

“I’m just his helpful little elf.”

I giggled. “Right, well, you certainly were helpful.”

“I just want to see the photos you take with the new camera... Just promise me you’ll submit again.”

Easier said than done.

“I have been submitting. Well, I was...” I trailed off.

He played with my hair in silence as I traced random shapes on the fabric of his T-shirt stretched across his chest, feeling the warmth of his skin radiating through the fabric beneath my fingertips.

“You just have to send the right photos to the right people. Expand your horizons a little.”

“I’ll try,” I said at last.

“You’ll get there.”
