I knew one thing.

I wasn’t about to go to Curaçao alone. And I also knew there was only one person I wanted with me.

Abbie.

Now, I just needed to convince her to go with me.

Something I knew was going to be so much easier said than done.

Abbie

I was busy behind the counter, refilling a drink for one of the customers, when the chime over the door sounded. I glanced over my shoulder to find Lucas standing there in his navy-blue parka and jeans tucked into his winter boots, pulling the snow-covered beanie hat off his head as he scanned the diner for me.

Soon as he saw me, he lifted a leather-gloved hand in a wave.

My smiled faltered for half a second.

Shit.

He’d texted.

And I’d never texted back.

Not on purpose, totally never on purpose. He was my best friend. I just forgot for the most part, and the other half, I didn’t know what to say. Congratulations? This was his fourth or fifth break up this year. He was going to run out of women around here to date at the rate he was going.

I watched him nod towards a booth off to the side, and I nodded back, checked the time. I was due a break anyway. I handed the drink back to the customer at the end of the counter and turned back to the grill window.

“Hey, Jimmy, Lucas just showed up. I’m going to take my break.”

“I’ll send Marnie over with coffee in a few. The usual?”

“Most likely.”

Lucas never strayed much from his order since we’d met my freshman year, and I doubted he’d change it now. I put my notepad under the counter, slipped off my apron, and went to join him.

His pale blue eyes lit up as I took a seat on the worn vinyl booth across from him. He was still pulling off his leather gloves that were lightly dusted with snow. Overhead Christmas music blared happily through the speakers.

I had to admit I liked this time of year. The music. The decorations. It made me happy. Even the snow some days didn’t really bother me.

“Long time, Abs,” he greeted.

“I know, I forgot to text you back. I’m sorry.”

“At least I know you’re alive.”

“Ha.” I smiled. “I’m on break for thirty, so I’m all yours.”

“Lucky me.” His eyes twinkled like a mischievous Santa’s.

“What brings you by?”

“Other than my need to make sure you’re okay?”

“Dude...”
