I tried to remember last Christmas and the invitations Lucas had received. A dinner party at one of the partner’s houses, an open house on Christmas day with another partner. Some new year’s party that the girlfriend of the moment had gotten to tag along to.

“A client offered me his place over Christmas.”

“Sounds nice.”

“Come with me.”

“Dude, it’s Christmas.”

“In Curaçao.”

I blinked. “No.”

The word came out as a hushed whisper.

“Yes.”

“I have work.”

Lucas looked at me for one minute, and I could practically hear the gears turning.

“Hey, Jimmy...” he called to my boss who was manning the grill for the night.

“Hey, Lucas...” Jimmy appeared through the grill window, a big smile on his face for my best friend.

“Can I steal Princess here away for Christmas?”

“Where you going?”

“Curaçao.”

“She’s all yours.”

“Jimmy...” I started, turning to face him. Marnie had disappeared into the back, or else I maybe would have had someone to try to side with me. Or maybe, maybe, once she heard Curaçao, she’d likely be telling me to pack my bags.

“It’s Christmas. Everyone goes home for Christmas. I don’t need you,” Jimmy reasoned.

I sighed.

Two against one, or three, actually, once Marnie joined in.

Lucas brought something up on his phone and turned it to face me.

One of the most dazzling houses I’d ever seen. All beautiful glass and angles and sunlight glinting off its surface against an impossibly blue sky.

It should have been front and center in a movie somewhere.

“What is this?”

“My client’s place.”

He leaned forward and swiped the photo, showing the back of the house. An amazing pool surrounded by comfortable red and white striped lounge chairs, with what looked like a small guest house off to the side, and down a little path was a strip of private beach, fenced off by a little white fence.

Beyond that, there was the ocean.

The literal ocean.

If Heaven was real, I was looking at it.
