I reached out, my finger grazing the screen for a moment.

“What does he do?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It does if it feels like we’re going to be raided while we’re there.” I looked at it again and swiped back to the first photo. Beautiful house. Definitely the raided type. Might almost be worth it.

“Doctor.”

“What’s he hired you for? You aren’t doing any criminal law, are you?”

“Abbie...”

I sighed. I zoomed in on the photo of the back of the house. It was beautiful. Amazing. A Christmas without snow.

A Christmas with Lucas.

I pressed my lips together. “Out of my budget.”

I could just imagine what the airfare alone would cost. Plus time off of work...nope, out of my league, wayout of my league. I put the phone back down and slid it across the table to him. I was going to have to get back to work soon. Well, just as soon as I ate half of his order. We hadn’t seen each other in weeks—he owed me.

Lucas put his hand over mine, stopping my giving him the phone back. “My gift to you.”

“We had a fifty-dollar limit.”

“Then it’s a Christmas miracle.” His boyish grin appeared, the one I’d seen him use many, manytimes to try and get his way, and I couldn't help but laugh. He knew exactly what he was doing. “Think of the photos...”

A sigh escaped me. I already was. It was tempting enough to actually have me contemplating willingly picking up a camera again.

I was already thinking of a new bikini and laying out there in the sun, forgetting my life for a few days.

I bit my lip in contemplation, and Lucas squeezed my hand. He knew he was wearing me down. “You're going.”

Finally, I sighed. “Yeah, I'm going.”

I had no willpower.

None.

Especially where he was concerned.

I stood up, leaned over, and kissed his cheek. “Thank you.”

He grinned that mischievous smile at me. “We’re not done yet. The food hasn’t arrived. Sit back down.”

I laughed and took a seat. Not more than a minute later, the food did arrive, with the extra fries. I grabbed the second fork and dug in, glancing at my watch.

“Catch me up on what else is new,” I said as he cut off a piece of his burger and set it on the half of the plate I was eating from.

Lucas left, taking half a lemon meringue pie home with him, so I knew he'd at least have something besides water, sports drinks, and beer in his fridge for a day or two. I gave him a quick hug, and he promised he'd text me later with more details. I cleared the last few tables, humming Christmas carols to myself.

Jimmy smiled as he took the plates from me. “You might as well cut out early.”

“Why?”

“The place is quiet, and there's a storm coming in. Go see Marnie for a few then head out. We're gonna close soon.”
