“Jimmy wastheplayer. He could write a handbook. Actually no, never mind, he doesn’t need to cause any more heartbreak.”

“I can’t thank you enough.”

“Yes, you can.” She laughed. “Take pictures and post them on your Insta so we can live vicariously through you. And we’ll have a belated Christmas dinner when you get back.”

I went over and hugged her. “Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas, but it’s still a way’s away.”

“Lucas said two weeks.”

I suddenly wondered about that. Two weeks put it before Christmas…

Marnie shrugged. “You barely take vacation days as it is. Besides, if the weather’s bad like they’re predicting with a potential blizzard or two right around Christmas, we’re going to keep the diner shut for a few days. You wouldn’t have work anyway.”

I pretty much floated my way home, then it was my two days off. I laid in bed the next morning, still half asleep, a mug of hot chocolate on the nightstand beside me, the curtains pulled back so I could watch the snow fall lightly outside, like I was in my own personal giant snow globe.

Lucas had had some out-of-nowhere ideas before, and I’d gone along with a few of them, but this one was the biggest of all.

My phone rang from its perch on my night table, Lucas’ ringtone, and I reached over, picking it up before it could go to voicemail.

“Hello.”

“Hey. Did I wake you?”

I laughed softly. “I’ve been up for a while, just watching the snow.”

I reached over and picked up my hot chocolate, taking a sip.

‘Well, get your fill, because we won’t be having a snowy Christmas.”

“Are you sure about this?” I asked again, biting my bottom lip nervously.

Maybe it was too out of nowhere. Maybe he really hadn’t thought it through enough.

“Relax, Abbie. Everything is booked, the flights, the rental vehicle...I even got a car to take us to and from the airport.”

“And you’re sure you don’t want to take someone else?” I took one last sip of the sweet chocolate goodness before setting it back on the edge of the table.

“Nope, just you.”

“Just me.”

I could sense his grin. “Did you break it to your parents yet?”

“No. You?”

“Waiting ’til the last minute. I already know Mom is going to give me another lecture when she finds out about the breakup.”

“She’s going to hire a matchmaker at some point, you know that, right?”

“Please don’t give her any ideas.”

“She is. But it will be amusing.”

“Not for me.”

“Clearly not, but great entertainment for those of us watching from the sidelines.”
