He laughed. “You have a cruel streak.”

“No...”

“I love you anyways, Abs.”

“Thanks.” I giggled, stretching a little and rolling over. “I probably need to think about what to take.”

“What do you need besides me, your passport, and a bikini or two?”

“While that is a very valid point. I probably need a few things.”

“Tell Santa what you need.”

“I haven’t written a letter to Santa in almost twenty years.”

“Tech’s advanced. All you need now is a wish list. Santa will find it.”

I giggled, my mind suddenly filling with a to-do list. “Bye, Lucas…”

“Bye…”

He hung up and I laid there, the snowfall heavier out the window. I should probably tell my parents. He could wait ’til the last minute with his, but mine were another story.

On the positive side, it would get me out of this year's lectures on what was I really doing with my life. To say they had always been less than supportive about my career choices…

I hesitated going through my contacts list then brought my mom's number up and hit call before I could talk myself out of it. I reached for the mug of hot chocolate, downing the rest of it quickly, needing something to soothe my anxious nerves for this little phone call.

I propped my pillows up while I waited and sat up in bed, angling the phone beside me.

“Abbie...”

“Hi, Mom.” I heard the dogs barking in the background. “How's it going?”

I listened to her chatter on about things at home while I tried to figure out the best way to put what was no doubt going to result in another lecture.

“So about Christmas...” I started at last.

“Yeah?”

I took a bracing breath. “Lucas invited me—”

“To what?”

“Spend Christmas with him.”

“Oh, honey...”

“In Curaçao.”

“Is something going on between you two?”

“No, Mom. We're friends, but he's got work to do there over the holidays and thought I'd like to go.” One little white lie wouldn't kill me. She didn’t know it was going to be an actual full-blown vacation. Something that was completely rare with Lucas.

“What about your family?”

“I don't think you're invited.” I laughed softly, trying to ease my way through the conversation. “I already said I'd go. I don't get to see him that much anymore, anyway...”

“You don't see your family that much, either.”
