“Why are you calling?”

“Spider senses as strong as ever. I’m reminding you about Christmas.”

“You aren’t coming.”

She got it right in one guess.

“I’m not.”

She sighed defeatedly.

My shoulders slumped. I opened a dresser drawer and pulled out a stack of T-shirts to go through.

“I’m going to Curaçao...client invited me, I couldn’t say no.” Which was true. My mother knew how devoted I was to my job. My father had had the same workaholic gene.

“I was looking forward to seeing you and your girlfriend.”

I went through the shirts in my hand, breaking them into two piles, yes and no. Two yes, three too grubby to go with. They got tossed back into the drawer. “About that…”

“Not again.”

“She wasn’t really my type.”

“In twenty-seven, almost twenty-eight years, I don’t think you’ve settled on a type other than breathing.”

“That is an important trait to have,” I reasoned.

“You need to settle down. I want grandchildren, Lucas...”

“And I’m not ready to give you any, Mother. Why don’t you do some volunteer work? Go walk dogs at the shelter, take up a new hobby...”

“Becoming a grandmother—”

“Is not a hobby.”

“And a dog is no substitute for a baby.”

I nodded in full agreement, picking another two T-shirts out of the drawer and tossing them into the suitcase. I headed to the closet, carrying the phone with me. I probably should have a dressier shirt or two in case we went somewhere fancy for dinner. “You’re just going to have to wait.”

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

“I’m running out of time.”

“No, you’re not.” I sighed, taking two shirts out of the dry cleaner’s bags and smoothing them out. I reached for a suit bag and tucked them inside. “You’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

“What happened with this one?”

“Mom.”

“You’re a grown up, Lucas. We can have these types of talks.”

“It just didn’t work out.”

“It never will if you don’t put your heart into it. Who are you taking with you?”

“Where?”
