“What?” I repeated.

“You’re looking at me and not the view.”

I laughed, glancing away, tucking my hair behind my ear. “I’m just thinking...”

“About what?”

“That hours ago, we were in snow, and now...not a single flake in sight.”

“And none will be for a while yet...”

“I can’t thank you enough for this.”

“You needed a break. And so did I.”

“True. I’ve barely seen you at all for months.”

“It’s been crazy at work. There’s a couple promotions up for grabs next year, so I’ve been working my ass off trying to get noticed.”

“Well, your clients are clearly happy with you.” I motioned at the view in front of us. They definitely had to like him to offer all this.

“Seem to be.”

“That should play into your favor.”

“Fingers crossed. Now, no work talk. We’re on vacation.” He leaned against me.

We’d stood out on my balcony, taking in the view and breathing in the fresh sea air, relaxing and just acclimating. Finally, I’d decided to lug the suitcases upstairs to our rooms, and Abbie had decided to take a quick shower before we officially decided what to do on our first night there.

I set my luggage in the closet and ran a tired hand over my hair. I opened one of the bags and rifled through it, grabbed a fresh set of clothes, and headed into the bathroom. It was massive, a large jacuzzi tub, an enormous glass-door shower that looked like it could fit several people, and a sauna on one wall. A dual sink vanity ran the length of the other. I set my clothes on the counter and grabbed a couple of towels from the linen closet.

The tub looked tempting, but I had a feeling if I got in and relaxed too much, I’d end up sleeping away our first night.

Sleep could definitely wait.

So shower it was.

Twenty minutes later, I was fresh and clean and a lot more relaxed. I kept an ear open for sounds of Abbie moving around down the hall while I put the towels in the wicker laundry hamper and went to unpack.

I stuffed my clothes into the dresser drawers and hung a few things up in the closet then headed downstairs, passing by her closed bedroom door. I stopped outside for a moment, no sound from inside. I was guessing she’d opted for the relaxing bath option. I just hoped she didn’t fall asleep in there.

I knocked on the door. “I’m headed down to the kitchen, see you down there.”

I went back downstairs to the kitchen and took a quick inventory of what was there. Dr. Allen had been nice enough to have them pick up a few essentials to get us through the first day or two, but we definitely needed to get a few things.

I grabbed a chilled bottle of water from the fridge and twisted the top off. I took a long sip while looking out the kitchen window at the expanse of sea behind the villa. A definite calmness had washed over me once we’d gotten there. I just wanted to relax and hang out with my best friend.

I wanted the whole vacation to be Abbie’s Christmas gift.

I leaned forward, opening the window to let some of the breeze inside.

I turned at the sound of footsteps to find Abbie walking into the kitchen, a content smile on her face and phone in hand. “You look relaxed,” I commented.

She blushed a little, pulling her damp hair back into a messy bun. “That bedroom is bigger than my apartment. I’m sure of it.”
