I held my hand out, but she shook her head, then swiped through my phone.

I sighed and put the wine down on the glass patio table nearby then headed to the hot tub. I lifted the lid and studied the controls on the side, adjusting them a little before climbing up the small set of stairs and getting inside.

The warm water felt amazing the second I stepped in. I slid down into it, stretching my arms out on either side and tilting my head back against the soft cushion. This is definitely the life, I thought to myself with a smile.

A moment later, Christmas music came from my phone. I laughed as Abbie waved her fingers at me. “There...perfect.”

She poured us each a glass of wine then came over and handed me both before she slipped into the hot tub across from me.

I smiled at her and handed hers back as soon as she was settled. I took a long sip of wine before sinking down further in the heated water, setting the glass off to the side.

The view was amazing from the deck, straight out towards the ocean, the waves going in and out in a gentle rhythm. Beautiful. Hypnotizing. It was like no one else existed except for the two of us. No wonder Dr. Allen had a place like this to escape to.

Abbie sipped her wine, and I could feel her studying me.

“Are you sure you wouldn’t have rather had—”

I put my hand up. “Abbie...”

“I’m just saying, girlfriend or best friend? Two different vacations.”

“Yeah. One I’m miserable, one I’m not.”

“So you didn’t say what happened. Other than give me the impression I should have thrown you a party or taken you out for a celebratory drink.”

“You should have.”

“That bad?”

“I’m pretty sure she was already planning our engagement announcement and studying up on wedding venues.”

“But you, Lucas Alexander, don’t do relationships.”

“Why are you bringing my middle name into this? What did I do to you?”

She grinned. “Did she even know your middle name?”

“Probably not.”

“That would have made the vows fun.”

“Abbie...”

“I know, you aren’t the relationship type.”

“Not with her, I’m not. And she didn’t get the hint.”

“So why did she break up with you?”

“I wouldn’t go to her holiday party with her.”

Abbie stopped mid-sip, her eyes widening as she lowered her glass. She swallowed the wine slowly before speaking.

“That’s it?” Her tone held a note of disbelief.

“That’s it,” I agreed with a nod.

“That seems petty, even knowing you.”
