“Hey...”

“I’m your bestie, I get to insult you. It’s in the friendship rules.”

“I wouldn’t insult you like that.”

“Because there’s no reason to.”

She set her wine glass down and leaned forward, ruffling my hair. I batted her hand away with a laugh, and she went back to her spot, amusement on her face.

“Do you ever think you’re just attracted to women who you know it won’t work out with?”

“I thought your degree was in photography, not psychology.”

“Touché.”

“Maybe I’m not a relationship type of guy.”

“At least you admit it.” She finished her wine and set her glass down on the ledge, her gaze drifting out to the ocean.

“Maybe I’m waiting for the right woman.” I took a sip of my wine then set the glass down. “What about you?”

Abbie leaned forward and pulled the wine glass closer. I noticed her lips pressed together as she no doubt tried to come up with an answer.

“Not really interested in the right woman,” she teased.

“Right man, then.”

“I’m married to the diner.”

“You’re not.”

“I am. I get hit on by college kids who try to impress me with their fifty-cent tip.”

“You could do better.”

“I know. I’m worth a fiver, at least.” She grinned and took a slow sip of her wine. “I like my life just as it is. Uncomplicated and completely my own.”

“You’re going to want a guy at some point.”

“At some point...” she repeated, looking as if she was weighing the words in her mind. “Until then, whenever this fictitious Prince Charming appears...”

“Tell me about your Prince Charming.”

“Lucas...”

“C’mon...”

“I won’t know until I meet him.”

“Bullshit.”

“Language. It’s Christmas.”

She climbed out of the hot tub then, carefully stepping out over the edge. I watched the water droplets trickle down her body. Her wet black bikini clung tightly to her curves and she bent over, disappearing momentarily out of my sight as she grabbed a towel to dry off.

She stood back up and I adverted my eyes to the sky for a few moments. “What are you doing? Leaving already?”

“No…well, yes, but I’ll be back. We’re out of wine, and I’m hungry.”
