I picked it up, checking my notifications. Marnie had sent a couple texts.

I brought them up, smiling at her comment on the photos I’d sent of the house and the ones I’d taken of the two of us at the airport.

Marnie:You look happy

Me:I’m in Curaçao

Marnie:It’s more than that

I didn’t want her to elaborate.

I knew she’d thought Lucas and I would be good together since probably the first time she saw us together. But I still had my concerns. This wasn’t the real world; this was simply an amazing vacation world where everything was perfect.

The perfect villa. No one around to interfere. No parents with impossible expectations.

I knew his mom. She liked me, but I’m sure she had visions of her future daughter-in-law being something other than a diner waitress.

I’m sure, too, if Lucas ever decided to settle down, he wanted a wife who had an occupation other than what mine was.

And I was fine as is. That’s what I told everyone. That’s what I told myself.

Lucas as anything serious was unattainable.

Hell, hemadehimself unattainable.

I knew that, and I still loved him, anyway.

I texted Marnie back that we’d talk later in the day, I needed coffee.

I slipped out of bed in my T-shirt and headed into the bathroom, brushed my teeth then brushed my hair, pulling it up into a high ponytail. I went into the closet where I’d left my open suitcases, not having really unpacked yet. I crouched down and dug through my luggage, pulling out a simple black bikini and a fresh bright blue tank top and a pair of denim shorts. I went back into the bathroom to get ready, added a light touch of make-up, and headed in search of Lucas.

I headed to the kitchen first, just in case he’d slipped by while I was getting ready, but it was empty, the house silent.

I went to the coffee pot, studied it for a moment, then went looking through the cupboards for the tin of coffee. I measured out the ground beans, added some water, and turned it on. In moments, the sweet sound of the water starting to percolate reached my ears.

I took two mugs out of the cupboard and set them on the counter before going back upstairs in search of my best friend. I stopped in my bedroom and grabbed my point and shoot camera I’d used yesterday for some photos, then headed farther down the hallway. His bedroom door was pretty much open, but a quick peek inside showed the room was empty.

The bed was pretty much made, not just a messy mound of bedding like mine currently was. I’d wait ’til I was a little more caffeinated to go and make my bed back up.

I stepped into the room, walking to the gauzy white curtains on the far wall covering his own balcony doors. I peeked through the curtains—no one outside.

The balcony doors were partially open, letting a soft rare breeze into the room, but still no sign of him.

So where was he?

Maybe he’d gone outside through one of the doors downstairs…but none of them had been open when I was down there.

And if he’d been awake, I was sure the coffee would have been started already.

Unless he’d taken off without me? Gone for some sort of coffee makeshift breakfast run? That was possible. I hadn’t heard the sound of an engine, but then again, I’d slept so well, I could have slept right through it.

It would make sense.

I decided to check and see if his wallet was still there. I checked the nightstand—his phone wasn’t on the charger, no wallet there either.

I went to the dresser against the wall with the television on top. I carefully opened one drawer. A messy tangle of T-shirts and tank tops greeted me. Pure Lucas, I thought with a smile as I went to check the drawer beside it.

I opened one drawer, just a pile of T-shirts. I went to the next, looked like underwear and swim trunks. A corner of a box caught my attention, and I pushed the pair of bright holiday red trunks slightly aside.
