Lucas grinned at me. “Camera?”

“Why?”

“I heard there may be some turtles in the water…fish…”

I shook my head. “I’ll do a first look…then go back with the camera.”

“Okay…” He shrugged and grabbed my hand, pulling me towards the water. “C’mon.”

I don’t know how long we spent in the water, but we swam out in the beautiful crystal-clear water. People passed by in snorkel gear, no doubt in search of the fish and turtles that had been mentioned. I moved into a relaxing float and bobbed on top of the water, watching a few people jump off the cliff into the sea.

A chill went through me at the thought, a reminder I wasn’t big on heights or that much of an adrenaline junkie. Lucas, on the other hand…he’d probably be first in line when the opportunity presented itself.

I felt a warm hand on my arm and jumped, coming out of my float to the sound of Lucas’ laughter.

“Sorry…” He wiped a hand over his face. “I just wanted to see if you wanted to head back to the chairs.”

“Tired?”

“Thirsty…and hungry…” He looked gorgeous as he stood there. “You going to stay out here?”

“Nah, I’ll go with.”

“Great.”

We trudged up the sandy beach back to our spot, our towels and bags just the way we’d left them. I wrapped my towel around me and dropped down on the lounger, waiting for Lucas to open the cooler while I grabbed a hair elastic and piled my hair up on top of my head.

He opened the cooler, taking the food out and handing me a sandwich and my drink. He set his beside his then leaned forward, grabbing his phone out of my bag.

I unwrapped my sandwich, looking at him quizzically. “You’re on vacation, remember.”

“I know.” He looked at me with a grin. “I just…”

He swiped the screen, biting his bottom lip. A moment later, he nodded to himself and typed something, before turning the phone off and putting it back in the bag. He went straight for his soda.

“Good news?”

“You could say that.”

“Well, I’m going to guess it wasn’t a text from your mom.”

He chuckled. “Actually, I probably should send her a text after we eat. Remind me, I’ll send her a pic of us as proof of life.”

I laughed. After a couple of bites of my sandwich, I looked at him. He was staying mum, which really wasn’t like him. “Wanna clue me in?”

“It’s…” He looked up from his food. “It’s a surprise, that’s all.”

“For who?”

“You’ll find out tomorrow.” His eyes twinkled.

“What are you up to?”

“You’ll see. Now c’mon, that sandwich isn’t going to finish itself. There’s still another bag of chips in here with your name on it, then I thought we’d go hit the snack bar, see if they had ice cream or something.”

“You do know we aren’t ten, right?”

He grinned looking at me. “I’m well aware we’re grown-ups. But I want ice cream.”
