I giggled. “Ice cream it is. But…”

He raised an eyebrow. “But?”

“When we get home later, I want a long soak in the tub and then a big glass of wine.”

“Doable.”

I grinned, holding my hand out. “My chips now, please.”

Curaçao was proving to be amazing, and we’d barely been there over twenty-four hours. We spent the entire day at the beach. I’d gotten a text message confirming our appointment for the next afternoon along with handy directions how to get to Mambo Beach.

I had a surprise for Abbie that I was sure she was going to love.

The island was beautiful, and I wanted to make sure we saw and experienced as much of it as we could. I’d never really had a vacation since I’d graduated and neither had she, so we both deserved one.

Especially Abbie. She was working so much, we barely had a chance to see each other anymore.

I’d picked up a large pizza and stopped to grab a couple bottles of chilled wine on the way back to the villa.

Abbie sat in the passenger seat, her eyes closed with the windows down, enjoying the breeze blowing through the open windows. She almost frowned as we pulled into the driveway.

I opened the door, and she took in the wine and the pizza while I carried our bags in.

She looked at me from behind the kitchen island, a smile playing on her face. “This doesn’t seem like real life, does it?”

I laughed. “Well, it’s ours for about two weeks.”

She grinned. “Can you open the wine? I just want to wash up a little. I smell like sunscreen and the ocean.”

“I happen to like the smell of sunscreen, thank you very much.”

“Ha.” She grinned. “I’ll be back in five, get the plates out, pour the wine. I’ll be back.”

I nodded then washed up in the kitchen sink. I’d leave our bags in the foyer for the moment. I just needed to wash out the cooler bag for our next trip to the beach, of which I was sure there’d be several.

I dried my hands off and grabbed the plates from the cupboard, setting them on the table. I opened the balcony doors, letting the fresh air in. I turned a couple of the far lights on dim and went about pouring the wine.

Abbie came down a few minutes later just as I opened the pizza box. She had a sweet smile on her face as she took a seat at the counter. She’d changed into a different tank top over a pair of lounge shorts, and I could see the straps of a different bikini peeking out from beneath the shoulders.

She took a sip of the wine with a sigh. “This is good.”

“Thank you.”

“Ha.”

“I picked it myself,” I argued. “I went for what sounded good in the cooler.”

“Not just what was closest?”

“Nope.”

“Well, then you have good taste.” She took another sip and leaned forward, looking at the pizza. “That smells good. Why is food always better on vacation?”

“No clue, but I totally agree.”
