“That’s fine, we’ll make do.”

Lucas smiled at me. “Wait ’til you hear the options.”

He looked super excited by the prospect.

“Can’t wait.”

“As I was telling Lucas, our company is small and family-owned, my father started it years ago before he met my mother, and my brothers and I are all guides. I’ve been doing this for years…” She smiled. “We customize it all to your tastes, whether you want to see the natural side of the island and explore its beaches, see the architecture and history or a mix of everything. The private guides give you more space, more time. You’re not hurried along, you’re not travelling with families with small children who can sometimes be temperamental. We work solely on your interests, your schedule. You want to stay at a place all day, we can. Not interested in one, we can change it.”

“Sounds good,” I said as Lucas wrapped his arm around the back of my chair.

“I told her to tell us about all the best sites for photos.”

I looked at the couple of brochures already set in front of him. Colorful pictures of sea turtles and schools of fish covered the one.

“Right. So we have the option for the sea turtle excursion in a few different places. We can do that in the morning, head to the flamingo sanctuary in the afternoon. That can be one day. There are the Hato caves to explore, beaches, snorkeling at Kenya Bench, diving…” She glanced at Lucas with a smile. “Anything you want…”

I glanced at my best friend. Yep, anything he wanted, all right.

A beautiful woman had practically landed right in his lap.

I leaned my chin on my hand, reaching for another brochure to flip through.

“We have day trips through Willemstad itself. There’s chances to take a private boat for a snorkeling excursion, explore a private island and lighthouse…have a catered lunch then come back in time for dinner.”

“It all sounds really good.”

“It does,” I agreed. Just how long had he booked her for? Because while a day or two would be interesting, I was suddenly concerned our twosome vacation had just disappeared in front of my eyes.

“We’ll start early tomorrow morning, start local? Do a day trip of the sights here in Willemstad, the old market, try some local cuisine. I can get a feel for what it is you want to see. It’ll give you time to look over the brochures a little more, and you can always text if you have any other questions.”

“Snorkeling?”

“For some of the dive excursions, we do need proof of diving experience.”

Lucas nodded. “I brought mine.”

“And I don’t have any…” I looked at Lucas.

She frowned. “Well, there are other options…”

She pointed to the brochures then started to bring things up on her phone.

I leaned over his shoulder, moving closer to him to see.

I don’t know what I expected when he said guide—maybe some woman in a polo with her name embroidered on a pocket somewhere, khakis, and a baseball cap? Okay, so maybe I just assumed a man.

Not Guide Barbie.

DefinitelynotGuide Barbie.

I looked at her talk animatedly away, her gaze wandering over Lucas a few times as he looked at the brochures she’d set in front of him. I watched her smile to herself. She clearly liked what she saw.

I reached for my drink and took a long slow sip of my fresh lemonade, no longer tasting its sweet tartness, just hoping it would ease my sudden case of nerves.

She was swiping through her phone, talking away and making sure she paid every bit of attention to Lucas.

Which I could completely understand.
