“Uh...” She yawned, reaching behind her as if ready to untie her bikini top.

“Hold up...I’ll grab you a shirt...”

I went to the closet and closed the door and groped the wall until I hit the light switch, squinting at the sudden intrusion of bright light overhead. Pure Abbie—she hadn’t exactly unpacked. Her suitcase was sprawled open, her clothes pulled out here and there, settling on top of the shelves off to the side. A top or two had been hung up in the closet along with a bikini draped over the top of one hanger, but other than that, everything was still in the suitcase.

I sifted through the clothes looking for a nightshirt, coming up with everything but.

Didn’t all females own a nightshirt?

I laughed at her strawberry-printed bikini panties and added them to the pile on the shelf.

I put a couple tank tops off to the side and voila, finally an old nightshirt. I took it out to her. “You should put this on.”

She looked at it with weary eyes.

“Too sleepy.” She yawned again. “I can sleep naked.”

I froze mid-step. I didn’t think encountering naked Abbie so close to naked Lucas was a good thing. “Why don’t you at least put the T-shirt on right now?”

“Mmm, k.” She raised her hands up in the air.

I carefully lifted the shirt over her head, tugging it slowly down.

“Lucas...Lucas...Lucas...” she sing-sang my name. “Lu…Luu…Luuucccaaasss….”

Tipsy Abbie was amusing.

Relaxed Abbie needed to be around more.

I chuckled.

I moved over and tugged the blankets back on her bed. She turned and crawled slowly in. I covered her up, could hear her breathing shallow out. When I looked at her, her eyes were closed, a sweet, sleepy smile on her face a few moments later.

I went downstairs and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge for her and went back up. She seemed to be sound asleep when I came back. I went over and darkened the curtains over the balcony door, double-checked it was locked. I didn’t want her going wandering in the middle of the night.

I moved the trash can closer to the bed, just in case as I made my way back to the bed, put the water on the nightstand for her, then sat carefully on the floor beside the bed. She was likely asleep, her right arm thrown over her head, her hair fanned out on the pillow.

She mumbled something about cookies.

I laughed softly.

She moved a little, rolling on her side.

Her hand flopped down, hitting my shoulder.

I waited for her to wake, but she didn’t.

I carefully reached up, gently setting her arm back on the bed.

“Merry Christmas, Abs.”

I leaned my head back against the mattress, looking at the gauzy curtains. I wished she’d see how I feel for once and maybe, just maybe, give us a chance.

“I love you, Abs. I’ve loved you since we first met…” I almost jumped at the sound of my voice, realizing the thoughts had slipped right out of my mouth.

Her hand dropped down, flopping on top of my head this time.

“Mmm, I love you too, Lou...” she mumbled.
