I tucked the phone away and turned. From where I stood, I could see some of the seating area.

He was going to take care of the bill and meet me. I adjusted my baseball cap I’d bought at the market and weaved my way closer.

I breathed deeply, letting the warm Caribbean air soothe me a little.

I saw Lucas standing at the table, his wallet in hand as Dominique came back.

My gaze narrowed slightly as I slid my sunglasses on, popping a piece of peppermint chewing gum into my mouth, and crossed my arms over my chest as I waited.

They talked. The waitress came by, and he swiped his card in the machine she’d brought over. Then he and Dominique began walking away. A moment later, I saw why—another set of couples eagerly took our table.

I noticed Gerda getting up from her table a few feet away, her small iced cream cone still in her hand, her phone in the other. She kept walking, her head down.

My eyes widened as I realized the path they were on…

In one second, Gerda collided with Lucas and Dominique. More Dominique as Lucas put his hand out to help steady Gerda. Her ice cream cone wobbled, part of it falling off right against Dominique’s top. I could hear the small yelp of surprise from our tour guide from where I stood.

I couldn’t help the laugh escaping me. I grinned. My heart suddenly feeling lighter than it had all day. I watched as Lucas and Gerda talked and Dominique hurried away. A waitress stopped by, and Lucas motioned to the cone. The waitress handed over a few napkins and took the cone. Lucas walked Gerda back to the table, and a moment later, the waitress reappeared with a fresh cone that Lucas handed to Gerda. She kissed his cheek, and with a wave, he was walking away.

I moved a few steps farther down, watching as Dominique reappeared, headed towards him with a couple of napkins against the front of her shirt. She must have called out to him as he slowed his pace and the two of them stopped outside of the tasting area.

She was talking away, then she pulled a piece of paper from her pocket and started to scribble something down.

I didn’t need to be psychic to know it was likely her number.

They kept talking for a moment or two longer, then Lucas nodded.

She smiled.

Leaned forward and...

Slipped the piece of paper in his shorts pocket.

Wow...

I stood there stunned for a moment or two while time seemed to freeze.

I shook my head and turned, heading farther down the walkway, not wanting to see what happened next. Kiss him? He kisses her? Who knows.

I reached for my phone. I could call Marnie—she’d tell me it was crazy and that I was crazy and—

“Hey...”

I turned at Lucas’ voice. “Hey...”

“Taking pictures?” He smiled.

The breeze was playing havoc with his hair.

I eyed him carefully. No sign of a mussed wrinkled shirt or hastily wiped away lipstick. I glanced over his shoulder for a moment, but she wasn’t anywhere in sight.

“Where’s...”

“She had a meeting with another client.”

Clientseemed an interesting choice of word all of a sudden.

He nodded to my phone again.
