She’d been silent for a song and a half, not even singing a single line.

Never a good sign.

“Abs?”

“Subs would have been fine, but spaghetti and that garlic toast will be great.”

“That’s not the whole thing, is it?”

“What do you mean?” She peeked around the tree.

“You don’t like Dominique.”

“I don’t need to.”

“She’s our guide.”

“More your guide. I’m just lurking in the shadows across the table.”

“Abbie, I hired her for you.”

“I don’t think she’s aware of that.” She dipped back behind the tree. “Maybe she has a friend for me.”

I growled.

She laughed. “Or a brother. She said it was a family business, right?”

“Tomorrow will be better.” Tomorrow was snorkeling, and we wouldn’t really have much to do with Dominique once we got in the water.

“For you, I have no doubt.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Oh, come on, you aren’t that naïve.” She sighed, walking around the tree, then went and picked up a few icicles and headed back to the tree. “Where exactly did she put that slip of paper with her personal and private cell phone number on it?”

I scratched my head for a moment. How did Abbie know she’d given me a slip of paper?

“My pocket.”

“Shirt or pants?”

“Pants.”

“I rest my case.”

Abbie

“You sure you’re up to snorkeling?” Lucas asked me early the next morning.

We’d been up late eating and decorating the Christmas tree. We’d taken our time, making sure it looked perfect, then sitting down and enjoying it before he dozed off on the couch.

“Of course.”

The coffee that morning had helped, and we weren’t due there for a while yet. We were just going to sit on the beach for a moment and get some air.

To be honest, an afternoon of snorkeling sounded amazing.
