She put her hand on the door handle, and I leaned over, gently pulling her hand away so she couldn’t run away.

At least, she didn’t react at the contact.

“Will you talk to me? We’re best friends, and we aren’t acting like it.”

She sighed and finally turned to look at me.

A Christmas miracle right there in the Jeep.

I reached out and lowered her sunglasses partially down her nose, but I didn’t even get a hint of a smile out of her.

She was adorable. Beautiful. The sun was already bringing out her beautiful freckles across her nose.

“You and Dominique...” she started.

“What me and Dominique?” I was puzzled.

“She’s into you.”

“She’s being nice.”

“No, being nice is saying hello and good morning. Being professional is asking if we need anything, how was our night last night. What she is...” She shook her head. “There aren’t words.”

At least, there weren’t words Abbie would say to me…

And her gaze went back out the window again.

I’d landed a whopping twenty-three seconds of her attention.

“You’re jealous.”

The words come out of my mouth the moment the thought hit me.

It was like an epiphany. I couldn’t help just staring at her.

“Oh my God...” Abbie mumbled as she looked at me wide-eyed.

“You are. You’ve never acted like this before.”

“Why would I be jealous over...” She waved her hand like she was trying to figure out how to describe our guide.

“A beautiful woman?”

“You think she’s beautiful.”

I wanted to hit my head on the steering wheel. I’d walked straight into the trap, and it had slammed shut behind me. “She’s nice-looking sure, but she’s not my type.”

“She’s female and breathing, Lucas. That’s your type.”

“I resent that.”

“It’s the truth.”

I sat there in silence.

I couldn’t figure this out. Abbie was confusing, more than any woman ever had been in my life. I thought I knew her, every single side of her, and now, it was like a stranger was sitting beside me. I’d never been more frustrated.

“I didn’t bring you all this way for us to fight.”
