She snorted. “She’s friendly, all right…to you…”

I’d give her that. But she tended to give Abbie some space.

“What am I missing?”

She shook her head. “Never mind. Look, tomorrow, why don’t you let Dominique take you for that ride she keeps offering...”

I literally felt her put the air quotes in that sentence.

“There is no ride.”

“Might want to tell her that.”

“Seriously.”

“Seriously.”

I stood there as she moved on to the next store. I sighed and followed slowly. “What do you want to do?”

She chuckled. “Go home.”

“I thought we could walk down to the tree again…”

“No, thank you.”

“I’ll get us a ride, then…” There were a couple of benches a few stores down we could go sit there and wait. I was about to mention it when she turned away from me. I opened my apps, found the one I’d used for the ride to the restaurant, and booked another.

The app said the taxi was ten minutes away.

Perfect.

Just perfect.

If the house were closer, I was sure Abbie would start walking there.

As it was, I wasn’t so sure she wouldn’t.

“Abs...” I started.

She stood a few feet away from me, glancing at the stores on the other side of the restaurant.

“What?”

Her voice was cool, a tone I’d never heard in all the years we’d known each other.

“I’m sorry you’re upset.”

She almost snorted. Then she turned to look at me. “What?”

“I’m sorry—”

“No, you aren’t.”

I ran a frustrated hand over my hair. There were a few couples walking down the street, which was okay, not a big enough crowd for it to really matter if this decided to blow up in my face.

Which, given Abbie’s mood lately, likely would.

“I am. Truly. Had I known, I would have never ever booked us a guide.”
