She shook her head. “You really think it’s just a guide...”

“Something’s pissed you off.”

“You’re blind and stupid, Lucas Alexander. Absolutely freaking blind and stupid.”

And that was the moment the taxi decided to pull up in front of us. The driver leaned towards the open passenger window. “Lucas?”

“You’re blind and stupid and…”

I wasn’t sure what the next words out of my mouth were going to be, so I’d stopped myself and stormed off a dozen feet away from where we’d stood, about as far away as I could get in a strange country with no money in my wallet, high heels on, and a dress that did not make walking a great distance back to where we were staying at all possible.

I didn’t honestly know who I was angrier at—Lucas or myself.

Or both.

Him for being so naïve…

Me for letting that stupid woman get between us and for so many foolish things. I was almost as inane as he was.

In love with my best friend.

Great time to realize it.

I heard the taxi pull up and Lucas’ voice. I spun around and hurried over, opening the back passenger door as soon as I could and moving to the far side of the seat, not wanting to be anywhere near my best friend. I pulled my phone out, scrolling through my social media feed, just needing to keep myself distracted.

Blind and stupid.

The words echoed through my head as the taxi drove us back to the villa. The driver tried to chat, and Lucas managed to keep up a conversation, his gaze drawn to me several times, but I never lifted my gaze from the phone.

I didn’t even know what else to say to him.

I’d never been that upset with him in my life.

He had enough experience with women—he couldn’t be that foolish. Could he?

Maybe all those break-ups were starting to make sense. It wasn’t that he couldn’t handle a relationship—it was that he had no idea how to be in one.

But we weren’t in a relationship…

Weweren’tanything.

The moment the driver stopped the car in the driveway, I stormed out of the car and hurried to the house. I was sure he wondered what the heck I was on as I practically ran to the door.

Thankfully, I knew the key code to get in, and I let the heavy front door slam behind me as I walked into the darkness of the house, hurrying to get away from Lucas before the fight had a chance to continue.

I’d hit my breaking point.

There I was, dressed up, my make-up carefully applied after watching a dozen tutorials, and I was still completely outshone by Dominique.

I didn’t care if it was the biggest coincidence in the world of coincidences, but seeing her there, her hand resting so casually on Lucas’ shoulder, the ease with which she smiled at him, the flirtation clearly in her eyes even though she possibly had a man of her own on the other side of the restaurant was just oh too much for me to take.

No one could blame me for snapping.

It had taken all my strength not to snap at her.
