I eyed the wet bikini I had hanging over the rod in the shower.

Damnit.

I had two other bikinis in the laundry room waiting to be washed. And that one I hadn’t even bothered to rinse out the chlorine from the pool.

I really didn’t want to slip on a wet swimsuit.

And I didn’t want to spend forever digging through my suitcases for another, either. Who knew where they’d be now since I’d been rummaging through my suitcase and so had Lucas.

Argh.

I glanced back at my reflection.

Swimming in my bra and panties just didn’t seem right.

Which left…

Skinny dipping.

I bit my bottom lip in thought, leaned forward, and tilted my phone to glance at the time. We’d left the restaurant almost an hour ago. Which meant we had to have been back for about half an hour already.

I knew his nighttime routine. When he was stressed, he’d have a beer and lull himself to sleep. Hell, if there was a hockey game on and he could pick it up on his phone, he’d watch that in bed ’til he fell asleep. If there wasn’t, he’d probably look for highlights then crash.

Either way, he wouldn’t hear me.

He wouldn’t be outside, either.

I’d give it a little more time, then tiptoe outside and out into the pool.

I nodded in approval of my plan.

I’d get rid of all the frustration that was clouding my judgement and be able to sleep.

And just to be on the safe side, I’d do a quick peek by his room and the kitchen before going out...just in case.

Lucas

I paid the taxi driver and got out of the car, heading towards the house as I pulled the keys out of my pants pocket. The house stayed dark as I neared—she’d probably gone straight to her room. I shook my head as the lights from the taxi backed out of the yard and I unlocked the door, slipping inside. I keyed in the code, resetting the alarm and tossing the keys down on the nearby table top.

I ran a frustrated hand over my hair and looked around.

Complete and total silence.

I didn’t want to stay down there; I doubted she’d reappear any time soon.

I headed up to my room, hesitating in front of her door for a moment. No sound inside. She couldn’t have run away. I put my hand on the door for a moment, thinking about knocking, then decided against it. I’d give her space to cool down a little and then we could try to sort things out.

I went into my room, shutting the door behind me. The dark space was illuminated by the moonlight streaming through the curtains. I headed to the bed and sank down on the corner, rubbing my forehead. I wished the night had gone better; I wished for a thousand other things, including my best friend talking to me again.

There was a vibration from the phone in my pocket, and I hurriedly fished it out, finding a notification about rating our taxi ride. I dismissed it and looked at my texts.

Marnie’s name in the corner caught my eye.

I checked the time in the corner—it was still fairly early. She’d probably be up.

I brought up our messages. We hadn’t spoken in a few days, but I was sure she and Abbie were in pretty constant contact. I wouldn’t doubt they were texting at that very moment.
