Nothing.

Silence.

He was probably still sound asleep sprawled across the bed, which was probably for the best. If I was a different type of girl, I’d figure out how to use those Bluetooth speakers that were sprinkled through the house and blare a little Rock music at top level.

But that wasn’t me.

At least, not yet.

If Dominique suddenly appeared in our little oasis, then I might just become that woman.

Instantly.

Three days with Dominique had proven enough to make me pull my hair out. Sure, Curaçao was beautiful, and we were seeing some amazing sights. The colorful buildings, the people, all the amazing food. The entire day on the water…

It was all great.

Except for the fact we had Dominique showing us around.

Every day, it was something new. It seemed like she was fawning all over him, walking beside him, practically feeding him as she had him try the local food...

Every night, we’d come back, I’d put on a bikini, and spend the night swimming out my frustrations in the pool. Sometimes, Lucas swam with me. Sometimes, he just sat off to the side in the hot tub or on one of the loungers.

We talked, but I never, ever voiced it.

To be honest, after doing some deep thinking about it with the wine bottle at two in the morning, it wasn’t like he was really responding to her, either. At least, not the way she was hoping he would. Maybe I’d figure out a way to clear the air.

I went and poured myself an orange juice from the fridge and took a seat at the table, checked my text messages. Nothing from Marnie after my panicked messages last night.

I turned to my social media. I’d posted a few sunset photos from the night of the BBQ on the island and was getting a lot of likes and comments. Even Professor Nelson had sent a comment on a few of the lighthouse pictures.

I thought I heard mumbling.

I almost slipped off the stool when I realized Lucas was already up and walking around outside, his cell phone to his ear. He moved by the partially open door.

I panicked for a moment, not sure I was ready to face him when his voice wafted in.

“No, I’m sorry, Dominique. We aren’t in need of your guidance any longer. No…I really don’t think I’ll be changing my mind. Yes, of course…I understand it’s nonrefundable. Things will be booked up if we change our mind, yeah that makes sense…no, not really interested in taking another snorkeling excursion on my own…though yes, I agree, the sunsets off the coast are spectacular…All right, thanks…bye.”

I waited ’til he walked through the door and put on my most innocent expression while I still tried to process what I heard. “I’m sorry. Did you and Dominique just break up? Do we need a moment of silence?”

He gave me the finger.

I laughed, glad we broke the momentary silence between us. “Why did you cancel?”

“I didn’t cancel. I fired her.”

“Why?”

“Because I’d prefer we enjoy the vacation.”

“You were.”

“I’m not if you aren’t.”

I stared at him, the determined set of his jaw, the intensity in his eyes. “I thought we were booked with her for this afternoon, another boat trip to see Pirates Bay or something.”

“You really would have spent more time with her?”
