I broke our gaze, turning my attention to my orange juice. I rubbed the side of the glass for a moment.

“I would have tried…” I said finally.

“It wasn’t worth it, Abs. Nothing’s worth messing up what we have.”

I looked at him in shock. Was he talking about last night or Dominique? I was suddenly very confused…and slightly worried.

He stopped in front of me as if reading my mind. “This vacation is about us, always has been. Eat up. We’ll find something to do later.”

“Right.” I took a sip as he turned and went to the counter, opening a drawer and starting to dig around. “About last night…” I said to his back, studying the broadness of his shoulders.

“Yeah?”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

“I do have to worry about.”

“No, you don’t. We’re good. I promise.” He glanced at me over his shoulder, and I could tell he meant what he said.

Relief hit me, and I finally relaxed in the chair.

“Then what are we doing today?” Dominique had had the next few days penciled in for us. I thought today was something to do with the fort and then another boat ride. To be honest, I hadn’t been paying complete attention.

He moved to stand in front of me and put another brochure on the counter. “I thought maybe sit on the beach out back for a bit, then some shopping.”

“So you’re going to play guide?”

“No.”

“Good, because I was about to say your ideas are kind of basic.”

“So that means you aren’t interested.”

“Oh, au contraire, I’m very interested in this beach you speak of.”

“Even though we have a pool...”

“And a hot tub, but neither gives me that pleasant feeling of sand between my toes on a full-sized beach…in December.”

He laughed. “Abs...”

“Hmm?”

“Never, ever change.”

“Promise.”

We walked across the Queen Emma bridge. Lucas casually held my hand as we strolled through the streets. It was a little more crowded than it had been, but I liked seeing the busy atmosphere. It felt more alive, more energetic. The wind, that I was getting used to, was up a little stronger than usual, blowing my hair around. Soon as we stopped, I’d dig an elastic out and throw my hair back up in a bun for a while.

I still couldn’t believe he’d gotten rid of Dominique and we were now on our own. I never would have expected that. I’d fully talked myself into just ignoring her…and him if I had to for the next few days in order to salvage things.

Lucas smiled at me as we stopped on the other end of the bridge, watching as the horn went, and a few moments later, the pontoons, and the bridge, slowly began moving to let the small boat go through the waters below.

“Okay, what do you want to do?” he asked as we watched the streams of people heading in different directions.
