I shrugged a shoulder, waiting. His silence went on for a few moments.

I bit my lip, setting the wine bottle down and then my glass.

He watched me closely.

“Abbie?”

“Yeah…” I walked over to him.

“Y-you look great…” The corners of his mouth lifted up into a smile, but I could see his eyes were still confused.

I went over and took the phone out of his hand before I took a seat on his lap, catching his eyes widen slightly at my move.

I hadn’t sat on his lap...ever?

I couldn’t remember.

He put his arm around me to steady me.

“What are you doing?” he whispered in my ear.

“I wanted a better seat,” I whispered back.

He raised an eyebrow.

I wiggled slightly.

And I got the desired effect almost immediately. A newfound confidence hit me, along with the memory of that kiss in the pool. I didn’t know what I was doing, other than taking the biggest chance of my life.

I looked into those curious blue eyes of his. He gazed at me intently, totally questioning what I was doing.

I took a deep breath and pressed my lips against his and let myself go, giving everything I had in that single kiss.

His hands wrapped around my waist, securing me, holding me close as if to make sure I didn’t suddenly let go.

My fingers wove through his silky hair, pulling him closer and closer until he became the very air I needed to breathe.

His lips moved against mine, slowly at first, almost tentative, then more intense. His tongue traced the seam of my lips over and over again. I gasped at the sensation.

He pulled back, his eyes slightly dazed and hooded as he looked at me.

I stood up, picking up his hand and tugging him to his feet.

He stood, and in a swift movement, picked me up in his arms. I couldn’t help the giggle that escaped me. He’d carried me before, when I’d hurt my ankle in the park playing frisbee, when I’d cut my foot at the beach...and apparently that night I’d gotten a little tipsy…but this was a whole other level.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

He looked at me up. “Upstairs…I don’t want to risk falling into the pool or off a couch…or a table…or anything else…”

The hallway was a blur as we headed to his bedroom, and he set me carefully down on his bed. He stood there staring at me for a moment, as if he were looking at a mirage.

I held my hand out to him. “Lucas?”

“Huh?”

“Top dresser drawer.”

I saw it dawn on him what I meant, and he chuckled, turning around. A moment later, he had a packet in his hand, and he was joining me on the bed. He slipped the T-shirt over his head, his body covering mine in a heartbeat.
