“You left it in a little long. The edges were crispy.”

“Do we have a bet?” I asked, holding my hand out.

She sighed. “’Til when?”

“Seven.”

“Tonight or tomorrow morning?”

“I’d say tomorrow, but I doubt you’d last that long. Tonight.”

“Deal.” She shook my hand, and I realized I liked the feel of her hand in mine. “Now, put your phone on the table…”

“You want to leave them up here?”

“Why?”

“I thought we’d go downstairs. If they’re up here, if we come up to get something, we can’t be sure the other isn’t…”

“Fine.” She picked her phone up. “Games room it is. Then the movie theater, it can’t be this close to Christmas without me seeing Elf at least once.”

I couldn’t help but grin—I had to admit a love of Christmas movies, too. “Whatever the lady wants…”

The bowling alley felt like being in some mine somewhere deep below ground, with the wooden tresses above us, the thick rock walls, and the lone bowling lane down the center.

I picked up the bright red bowling ball as the pins reset, ready to take my turn, when the phone vibrated in my pants pocket. I hesitated half a moment.

Argh. This is killing me.

I’d been good ignoring it since we came downstairs…mainly because it had been silent up until a little while ago. And now, suddenly, I was Miss Popular.

I swore it had vibrated five times in the last few minutes.

I shook my head, lined up, and let the ball go, watching it veer off to the side and take out the last two pins on the right side. I turned to find Dean standing there in amusement, no doubt knowing what exactly had thrown me off my game.

“I heard you vibrate.”

How good was his hearing? Concerts were supposedly mega loud. “What if it’s an emergency?” my eyes narrowed.

“Wanna check? I’d love to see you make beef wellington.”

“Do we have the ingredients? Never mind. I’ll wait.”

“If you’re sure?”

“Absolutely.”

He nodded then walked past me to take his turn.

I sank down in the chair, watching him…there was the slightest pull to him that I’d felt even before I realized who he was.

Which was stupid. So damn stupid. Look who he was. Look who I was. Never fall for a rock star was a motto every girl knew, but how many ended up stranded with one during the blizzard of the decade? That was courtesy of the latest notification I’d snuck a peek at on my phone.
