I walked up to the group in a few smooth strides.

“Arya,” I said, interrupting. “May I?” I extended my hand, and she beamed up at me. There was no hesitation when she took my hand.

“I’d love to dance with you,” she said.

We each gave an apologetic nod to my mother’s latest victim and moved to the dance floor. I risked a glance at Mom and she was stunned by my gesture.

We fell into the rhythm of the slow music that was playing.

“Thank you for rescuing me,“ she whispered, and I pulled her even closer.

“I’m sorry my mom is getting so desperate. She’s playing matchmaker for you now, too.”

I could feel every single set of eyes on us, but I didn’t care.

“I’d kiss you right now, if I could,” said Arya.

I tilted her face toward me, lowered my lips, and kissed her gently. I was done hiding my love for her. I was done pretending that I didn’t care about her when I did. As I pulled away from the kiss, I noticed my mother leave the room furiously.

I had never in my life met someone as obsessive as my mother–and I’d gone to medical school. I began to see her in a new light and I wasn’t happy with the kind of person she was.

“Your mom is officially pissed off,” said Arya and I smiled.

“Just imagine how pissed off she’ll be when she learns the whole truth.”

Despite feeling like the world was falling down around us, we both laughed.

But the truth hit me like a bomb. My parents weren’t going to let this slide.

I had to think about my best friend’s job and how my parents were going to bully Arya and her family. I needed to do something before things got out of hand.

Chapter 26

Arya

Tristan’sboldmovelastnight made me feel so special. He had said he’d do anything to prove his love for me and he was doing exactly that. I wasn’t even afraid anymore of what his parents would do to my family. Tristan was powerful enough to put a stop to any of their antics.

But, I had to admit that what lay ahead wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. I also knew that it was time to quit my job next door and start focusing on my future at the bakery. After an eventful few days, my mom had taken the day off. I told her to let her hair down for a few days while I took care of the bakery. My hope was that she could retire and enjoy all her hard work. It was time for me to take care of her for a change.

The staff at the bakery were so efficient I knew I would be able to trust them to get the job done when I had to focus on my pregnancy. I was already daydreaming about the future…and it looked good. With Tristan by my side, I felt like I could do anything.

My daydreaming was brought to a screeching halt when an angry Rebecca Adler stormed into the bakery.

The morning rush was long gone and there were just a couple of customers sitting and having their coffee. I prayed she wouldn’t cause a scene.

“Good morning, Mrs. Adler,” I said with a smile.

She said nothing, but slowly slipped off her designer sunglasses.

“I always looked at you like the daughter I never had,” she began with a lie and looked at me as if I were a piece of slime. “It’s a shame you've decided to go against me.”

“I’m afraid I don’t follow.” She was really going to do this. Here?

“Don’t play dumb with me. You think I’m not aware that you’ve been seducing my son. Wrecking his home,” she said, trying in vain to keep her voice down. This woman was delusional. I noticed the other customers grew quiet, waiting for what was to come next. I couldn't help myself.

“I didn’t wreck anyone’s home. Regina and Tristan are divorced and they've both moved on. It's only you and Mr. Adler who can’t seem to get the memo.” I finally found the courage to stand up to her.

Rebecca wasn’t expecting me to fight back. That was clear by the surprised look on her face.
