“You’re pregnant, Arya. You’re pregnant with Tristan’s child. There is no fixing this. If anything, it's only going to make Rebecca angrier and we all know how vile she can be when she’s angry,” he responded, getting up from his seat.

Mason placed his hands on his waist as if to support his frame from falling apart with rage.

“I’m already fixing it, Mason. I broke up with Tristan and I promise, I won’t be seeing him,” I swore to him. I thought that he would be happy that I wasn’t seeing Tristan anymore, but he looked sorry for me instead.

“It’s a little too late for that, don’t you think?” he responded.

I wasn’t sure if he was pleased or displeased with my decision.

“You’ve already started a war with the Adlers and they’re not just going to stop at firing us. They’ll sabotage the bakery.”

“Tristan won’t let them hurt us like that,” I said, with tears streaming down my puffy face.

“This is a small town, Arya. Social power is what works here and Rebecca has powerful people in her pocket.”

Mason shook his head sadly.

“Tristan can’t save you or me from this. Soon he’ll be long gone back to his life in New York. Is he taking you with him?”

Tristan wanted us to get away from all this chaos. Mason had no idea that the only reason I had stayed was because I couldn't desert him and Mom.

“We could all just leave and start over.” I knew what I was suggesting was not practical and my family would never accept Tristan to pay any of their bills.

“Maybe you can, Arya, but Mom and I are here.”

Mason took another drink.

“At the end of the day, he’s an Adler and his parents’ vile blood runs in his veins. What makes you think he won’t eventually turn into them?” he asked.

I wanted to believe that Tristan was different from his parents. He had kind and loving grandparents.

“That’s enough, Mason,” Mom said, coming down the stairs. “Arya fell in love with Tristan and he fell in love with her. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.”

“This is why Arya will never take responsibility for anything. You keep making excuses for her and because of that, she makes terrible decisions,” said Mason as he downed his drink. “I think I’m going to spend the night at my place.” He slammed the door behind him.

I wanted to run after him, but my mom stopped me.

“Leave him. He’s just angry. He’ll come around.”

“I’m sorry I got us into this mess, mom.”

“There’s nothing to be sorry about. It’s not your fault that Rebecca abuses her power and obsesses over her son. It’s not normal. Relax and let me make you some tea. All this stress is not good for the baby.”

I sat back and thought about how I needed a break from all this drama.

Tristan

I had never felt heartbreak like this before. I loved Arya so deeply and it hurt more knowing that my family was keeping us apart and she didn't want me to reveal her pregnancy.

My dad wasn’t as difficult as many people thought, and he was generally much more reasonable than my mom. But after years of living with her influence, he’d turned into a power hungry, controlling maniac, too.

I had barely slept the night before. I laid awake, thinking about what my grandfather had said. When morning came, I had renewed hope and the strength to fight for Arya.

I was expected at lunch with my mom, and it was the last place I wanted to go. But I decided to go for Shiloh. She must have been so confused with all the conflict going on. I tried my best to shield her, but she was smart and must have been picking up on everything. I just hoped and prayed that the time she spent with my mom wasn’t filled with false hope that her mom and I were going to work things out.

I headed for the backyard after pulling into the driveway, drawn by the sound of Regina and my mom laughing. Immediately, I noticed Shiloh and my dad were missing from this so-called family lunch.

Sighing, I knew this wasn’t going to go well.
