“Let’s get out of here.” Her voice is soft and sweet. Like she’s talking to a wild animal. I like it.

“Yeah, I have an even better spot to take you.” I move my hand over hers, leading her back to the shadows where this all began.

Alexis

Well, that was scary and attractive. Watching him get all alpha male and punch that guy out for calling me a whore was solid romance novel material.

I stay close to him as we glide through the crowd toward a medium-sized brick building. Why are we headed toward the bathrooms?

He leads us to the back wall hidden in thick shadow. I can’t see a thing, but his large warm hand grabs mine and places it on a cold metal railing.

“Climb,” his deep voice commands.

I find my footing, get another hand on the ladder, and start my advance to the roof.

The view from up here is breathtaking. Being a fly on the wall watching the people down below as they move about. A petite blonde bounces out of one of the haunted houses, and it hits me.

Kate. Shit.

I pat myself down, searching for my phone and cursing under my breath.

“What is it, my pet?” The concern in his voice has me so soft, but this just isn’t the time.

“I can’t find my phone.” I check my pockets again, even though I know they’re totally empty.

It could be anywhere. The refrigerated room where I panicked, the grass where Lucas calmed me down, the maze where he pulled my pants down, the costume building where we played… This place is so busy, I’m nervous there is no chance I’ll find it.

“Here, use find my phone, and I’ll go grab it wherever it pops up.” He passes his cell to me, unlocked.

I hurry to find the tracking app and log in. I stare at the screen as it loads before bringing up my device, showing it’s less than a block away.

“It’s close,” I explain, giving him back his phone.

“Okay, easy. I’ll go grab it and be back before the show.” He places a kiss on my cheek before making his way back down the ladder and disappearing into the darkness.

It’s like I'm on a different planet, and I’m only thirteen feet off the ground. The music is softer here, the smell of fog machines is nonexistent, as all I can smell is fried dough and popcorn. I had forgotten that the haunt does a firework show. It’s going to be amazing from here.

I get lost in watching the people below. Laughing to myself as a group of teenagers get scared by the same girl in the hospital gown that threw me into a panic earlier.

It clicks for me then. Lucas hasn’t done anything but shown me pleasure and respect, and yet I find myself seeing clearly for the first time. This is all just smoke and screams. I knew logically they were normal people in costume, but it hasn’t been until right now that I can almost see through the paint and latex and be stronger than my fears.

I can feel eyes on me.

I must have been so lost in my own head, I didn’t hear him come back up the ladder.

“Did you find it?” I ask, turning toward him to take it.

But it’s not Lucas standing there. It’s the guy from the costume shed, Kody.

“Hello, whore.” He sounds angry. His nose is caked in dry blood, and his left eye is already shadowed by a large purple bruise.

This… This is real fear. Being thirteen feet above the nearest person, left to the mercy of a pissed off stranger.

I should say something, try to calm him down before he does something to hurt me. But the words die in my throat as he comes closer and I have nowhere to run.

Lucas

I’m right where her phone should be. Behind the house where we sat and I warmed her up. I click on my phone’s flashlight, and it reflects against the glass touch screen.
