“I was just watching the firework show.”

I stand, holding the phone between my cheek and shoulder. I put myself back together and turn away from Lucas so he can do the same. I don’t need to get distracted again right now.

“Okay, well, it’s over, so let’s get headed home.”

Her words have me feeling sad. I don’t want this to be over, but the fact that it was just one night of fun is what made it so special.

“Okay, I’ll meet you in the parking lot. See you in few,” I tell her, trying to hurry off the phone so I can say goodbye to my monster.

“Okay, hurry.” She hangs up.

I don’t hesitate rushing into his arms, lifting my face to his and kissing him. Invading his mouth with my tongue as I hold on to him tightly.

We separate and quietly move to the ladder. We know what’s coming.

He walks with me as we follow the crowd to the black gates. Tonight was amazing, a night that I will think about for the rest of my life.

We’re almost there as he grabs my elbow to stop me.

“I’ll never forget tonight.” He gives me a final soft kiss before walking away in the opposite direction of the exit.

I findKate and Jay leaning on the car. I know when she sees me because her face lights up and the worry that I could see from far away has thawed.

“I’m so glad you’re okay!” She pulls me into a tight hug before holding me out at a distance to look me over.

“I’m okay, I’m sorry. I misplaced my phone and didn’t notice until just a bit ago. It was great. Nothing to worry about.” I assure her.

“Whatever you say.” She checks me over again, her eyes lingering on my neck. “Let’s get home. I'm exhausted.”

I nod to her in reply, and we all pile into the car.

Jay starts the engine and slowly makes his way out of the spot as we fight traffic to get on the road.

I don’t hear any of the music that is playing through the speakers or understand a word they say from the front seat. All I can think about is fangs and white eyes.

Happy Halloween.

Alexis

Ican’t stop thinking about him. I took a shower last night, realizing that I might not ever smell like him again.

My alarm just went off, and I still haven’t slept a wink. I told myself I shouldn’t do this. That it would kill the mystery of last night. But that’s it. I need to see him.

Snatching my things from my nightstand, I throw on the first outfit my hands touch and hurry out the door.

I don’t even make it a step into the hall because Jake is blocking my way.

Fucking great.

“Lexi, hey.” He looks a mess. His clothes are dirty, and he smells of rancid beer.

Absolutely not.

I find his dorm key on my ring and almost break a nail as I ferociously fight the metal to hand it over. Finally getting it free, I pass it over and hurry down the hall toward the stairs.

“Lexi, that’s it? We’re not gonna talk?” He sounds hurt, and I couldn’t care less.
