“Do I need to go get your stuff?” she asks, livid.

“Nope, I still got my charger. Walked right past his flaccid dick and told her that she deserved better. The fucking prick tried to explain it all to me and everything. I dumped him on the spot.” I pop a couple gummy bears into my mouth to stop the feelings from taking over.

“Wow. I’m proud of you.” She places her hand on my knee. “I can’t imagine how hard that was. If it was Jay, I’d be a total wreck.”

Jay would never. He kisses the ground Kate walks on. But I know what she means. She’s being honest. If I could dare imagine her in my shoes right now, there would be no getting her out of bed to go to the store. No picking out candy to make her feel better. She would be a sobbing mess. Refusing to see the sun until she’d cried every last tear.

“Yeah, but you don’t have to worry about all that. Aren’t you two going to that haunt tonight?”

I bring another gummy bear to my mouth, but I’m candied out.

“Yeah, Jay and I are supposed to go with Kevin.”

Kevin is Jay’s roommate. They’ve known each other as long as Kate and I. Although they’re not quite as close, this is a yearly tradition for them.

“That will be fun,” I assure her.

“Yeah, I know. But I don’t want to leave you here to deal with all this.” She starts pacing.

Kate is a fixer. She wants to fix this for me. She’ll want to leave knowing I feel all better. Otherwise, she will just worry. Unfortunately for both of us, this isn’t as simple as when I missed the deadline for an assignment freshman year. She can’t just write an email to help me get out of this one.

“It’s fine. Come watch this with me until Jay steals you away.” I pat the only spot not covered in snacks.

She slips out of her shoes, joining me. We continue to munch through the pile of sweet and salty as we get through two more episodes before Jay arrives. He announces his presence with two firm knocks then slowly opens the door.

“Everyone decent?” His cheery voice sounds odd for such a somber day.

“Yes,” Kate answers, giving me an apologetic smile.

She slides off the bed, wrapping him in a tight hug, and he kisses her sweetly on the cheek. There is all that perfect relationship happiness. That is, until he looks up to see me.

My twists are piled on top of my head, tied up with a scrunchy. The baby hairs that had been gelled down onto my forehead are probably trying to catch the early evening news from the number of times I’ve dragged my hands over my face.

“Lexi, are you alright?”

Before I have the chance to answer, Kate gives him the CliffsNotes version quietly from her side of the room.

“Want me to kick his ass?” he offers.

“Not this time, but I’ll hold you to that if I ever do.” I give him a smile, but I doubt it’s a good one.

“So I have some bad news. Kevin had to bail.” He’s only speaking to Kate, so he tries to whisper.

“Okay, so we have a free ticket now?”

She doesn’t talk quietly, and why does she sound so chipper?

Oh god. No, no, no, no, no!

“Lexi-loo! Come with us tonight?”

She’s lost her mind.

Me? Go to a scary amusement park? It’s completely laughable. Ever since my parents pressured me to go into a haunted house at the ripe old age of twelve, I’ve never gone back. I was always a cutesy Halloween kind of girl after that.

“No, I'm good.”

She glares at me.
