A strobe light clicks on, but we can’t see anything. The fog machine has filled this place to the brim. The strobe stops, and we’re thrown back into darkness.

I swallow hard just as someone grabs my hand, and I squeal.

“You are such a chicken. Deep breaths. You just said out there you know it’s supposed to be scary.” Oh thank God, it’s just Kate, but she’s right.

I give her hand a squeeze as I follow behind her. The other guests behind me give me no relief from the anxiety growing in my stomach. I’m just waiting for someone to pop out of nowhere and scream in my face.

We make it down the hall with no trouble, but the moment we turn the corner, the strobe comes back on, and it’s disorienting. People pop up in different places all over the walls, screaming and shouting.

I join them.

A girl dressed in a bloody hospital gown stands in front of the group as we make our way through. I watch as she tilts her head from side to side, taking in the sight of us. The end of the line goes by, and she lets out this blood-curdling scream that has me wanting to run for the hills.

“Fuck this,” I tell Kate as I take a firmer grip of her hand.

Walking through a fabric door, we enter a room full of metal tables and bloodied surgical equipment.

Because why would they possibly be clean?

A tall figure stands at the back of the room over an opened body. He lifts what looks to be an intestine dripping with liquid. He drops it, and the splashing sound fills the silence.

That funnel cake is about to make a reappearance.

“Fresh bodies for the taking,” a deep male voice echoes in the small space. “Any volunteers?”

The room erupts with commotion as five horrifying nurses burst in, getting in various people’s faces. I feel someone at my back as a plastic knife is dragged down my arm.

“How about you? You’re so cute. We could do some great things with you,” the high-pitched female voice says against my hair.

I shake my head, biting down so I don’t make a sound. Clearly unhappy with my response, she moves on to a different person as we slowly make our way out.

My blood is pounding in my ears, and I don’t know if I can handle going through the other three houses. Jay mentioned this was the easiest.

The house continues like the beginning, lots of fog, strobe lights, and shouting. Until we pass through a curtain of plastic, and the room is bright and cold. It takes a second for my eyes to adjust, listening to the sound of freezing air being pumped in. I’m immediately chilled to my core as the things around me start to take shape.

Plastic body bags hang upside down all over the room. I think one of them is moving.

The sound of muffled struggling grows louder as we get closer on our way to the door on the other side. This isn’t that bad. It’s just cold and a little creepy.

Thud.

My eyes go wide, and I’m frozen in place. Kate pulls me to her side, and I want to look behind me, but I know I shouldn’t. I won’t like what I see, and anything could be there.

I wait for someone else to turn around first, but they all make a beeline, walking fast, for the door. The scraping of metal against metal catches my attention, and I can’t help it. I have to look.

Turning slightly, I find the monster man from earlier. Towering over the crowd, his white eyes find me with ease. He has a machete in his hand that is being dragged across the makeshift wall.

Part of me is terrified. The other is drawn to him like a moth to a flame.

Kate lets go of my hand, and when I check to see why, another girl in a bloody hospital gown is only an inch from my face.

My stomach drops, and so do I. My anxiety skyrockets, and I can’t think straight.

She gets down on her knees, her head going to one side as she stares down at me.

The chill of the floor penetrates the fabric of my pants like they’re not even there. I’m shaking from the cold and fear.

She starts laughing at me while she sings some twisted lullaby. I scoot away quickly until my back hits the wall.
