Istare down at the email. Is this real? Hell’s Gates is coming to town next weekforone night only?

I sprint across my dorm, whipping out my card and buying three tickets with a quickness that even surprises me. Shooting a text to the group chat I have with Kate and Jay, I let them know I just got us tickets to the Krampus-themed Holiday Haunt.

The last few weeks have been terrible. I’ve missed Lucas so much, and I ache to be in his arms again. Kate has tried to pull it out of me, what I was up to all Halloween night. But some things are just for me. I’m sure her imagination has run wild. Especially after seeing the results of our fuck fest the next day.

My monster’s bites left some pretty interesting marks.

A week isn’t much time to ready myself for another night with him, to mentally prepare for the inevitable goodbye.

I’m killing my own mood here.Think positive and plan.

I haven’t slept with anyone else. I’ve gone on a couple dates, but I did like he said. I compared every single guy to him, and they all fell flat.

The door opens with a soft creak as Kate and Jay walk in.

“Since you don’t want to text us back, we came to chat,” Kate says matter of factly.

Finding my discarded phone lost in my comforter, I see the group chat blew up.

“Sure, okay,” I tell her with a laugh, settling on my bed and waiting for the interrogation.

Kate sits across from me on her own as Jay takes her desk chair, rolling it next to her.

“Wow, you two look serious.” I’m trying to break the tension that’s slowly filling the air around us.

“I want to know what happened on Halloween. Who goes from freaking out at the thought of spooky things, disappears in a haunted house, only to come home smelling of sex, covered in hickeys?”

Her tone is irritated and her face is red as Jay squeezes her knee for reassurance before she continues. “Goes off the next morning with no explanation, comes back like she just got the worst news of her life. Then you go and buy tickets for Hell’s Gates a month and a half later.” Her brow is furrowed, her arms crossed.

“Kate, I told you, this one is just for me. I met someone that night, and I hope to see them again. It’s not that deep.” I try to shrug the rest of this conversation off.

“It is that deep, Lexi. You had just been cheated on. You were in a vulnerable place. I just want to make sure no one took advantage of you and you’re not about to let them do it again.”

I’m getting angry. She doesn’t have a clue of what she’s talking about.

“Look, I appreciate the concern, but I am a big girl and can take care of myself. You don‘t have to try to fix everything all the time. I had the time of my life that night. There is nothing to fix here,” I tell her.

That’s not true though. I want a solution where at the end of this event, they pack up and leave, but he stays here.

“Understood. I’m sorry I overstepped.” She sounds hurt, but this is still just for me.

“You are a wonderful friend, Kate, but I promise, I’m good. I’ll let you know if that changes.”

Her smile comes back, and I can see we’ve hit a good place. Jay gives another squeeze to her knee.

I’ve always had a tinge of jealousy for their relationship. But ever since I had to leave Lucas with the haunt, I have reached a whole new level of envy.

I just keep reminding myself, if he could, he would.

The week has gone by so quickly. I can’t believe I’m sitting in Jay’s back seat, admiring the passing scenery. My fingers spin the grip on the back of my phone as I try to busy my hands through these last few miles of road. T minus fifteen minutes, and I’ll be standing outside the walls of paradise. We are so close, but it’s not close enough.

My mind drifts, and I can already smell the popcorn and fake fog. Feel his warmth spread over me like a blanket. See myself looking up into his bright-white gaze.

Goosebumps break out over the surface of my skin as we turn into the parking lot.
