All the varioustraveling homes are parked behind the haunt. Buses, RVs, made-over vans. You name it, it’s probably in this lot.

We step up to my well-loved 2000 Minnie Winnebago. I’m nervous for her to see this place, to learn what she thinks of my one little slice of the world.

I unlock the door before holding it open for her to step in first.

“Welcome to my home,” I say as I follow closely behind her, taking in lungfuls of the artificial smell that has kept me company these last few weeks.

“This is lovely.” She takes a deep breath, and I still. “Smells…homey.”

I relax as I watch her take in the small space, her eyes bright with curiosity.

“Go ahead, be nosey.” I chuckle.

A smile takes over her face as she runs her hand along the dated countertop on her way back toward the bed. It’s messy from last night's sleep. But she doesn’t seem to care as she plops down, bringing my comforter to her nose and taking deep breaths.

She lets out this enticing sound, and I have to remind myself that I wanted to help clean her up. Digging through the various cabinets, I find some gray sweats and a T-shirt.

“Want to shower with me?” I ask her eagerly.

Her eyes appear from behind the thick blanket, and she nods enthusiastically as she hurries off the bed to strip. I double check the door is locked before I turn the small shower on to let it warm.

I enjoy the sight of her bare before me, her beautiful brown skin on display as she pulls her hair up out of the way before crooking a finger at me. I don’t hesitate. I rush to her, ripping my clothes off along the way.

I still have the prosthetics stuck to my face. Normally I’d be very good about removing them properly, but I’m ready to be Lucas for her. When I lift her into my arms to carry her to the shower, she wraps herself around me. I step in, and her back gets sprayed with the warm water.

She groans, relaxing into my hold. “That feels so good. I needed this.”

I want to say “I needed you,” be even more vulnerable with her, but once the sun comes up in the morning, I turn back into a pumpkin.

Gently placing her back on her feet, I stick my face into the hot water, peeling the chin and forehead foam off before scrubbing my skin clean. A step in the right direction. I pluck the funky contacts from my eyes, throwing them down the drain.

Turning back to Alexis, I watch her eyes skate over my features, taking me in.

“There you are, Lucas. I’ve missed you.”

Not saying a word, I grab her face in my hands and kiss her like there is no tomorrow.

I clean her up, taking my time washing away the dirt from our fun time on the roof. Enjoying the way my body wash makes her smell like me.

We get out of the shower, and I gesture toward the clothes I’ve laid out for her. She slides them on, and seeing her in my clothes, having her smell like me, calms the primal part of me that wants me to mark her so everyone knows that she ismine.

She slips between the covers as I grab us both a bottle of water before lying down behind her. Wrapping myself around her, savoring the way we fit together so perfectly.

Lucas

The drive to her dorm is quiet, the tension between us palpable.

I slept amazing last night. Waking up to her pressed against me was better than anything my mind could have dreamed up. Holding her in my arms this morning, I savored every ticking second before we had to return to reality.

“This is me,” she says, pointing to a large brick building.

I pull into the parking lot, idling in front of the glass doors.

“Thank you, for everything.” She looks up at me through thick, dark lashes. She’s still dressed in my clothes from last night, looking like a goddess in my passenger seat.

I bring her hand to my lips, kissing her fingers before whispering against her skin, “Thank you, Alexis. I’m sorry that this is goodbyeagain.”
