“Let me see your phone for a minute.”

I hesitated. The romance novels at my library were pretty tame when it came to the sizzle factor in the bedroom. But I had a giant hoard of ebooks on my e-reader app that were pretty much straight-up porn. So far, I’d managed to keep it a secret. The last thing I needed was Theo stumbling on my sexy reads.

“I’ll show you how to make these guys stop sending you those pictures,” Theo said.

Reluctantly, I passed my phone to him. He typed out a message then gave the phone back to me. When I read what he’d written, I choked.

Do you expect me to be impressed by that ugly blade of grass you’re waving around? Don’t waste my time. I deserve bigger and better than that.

“Theo! Oh my God.”

He shrugged and stepped on the gas, continuing down the road again.

“It’s true. If you won’t say it, I will. Or Chase will.”

Chase replied, “I’d prefer something along the lines ofgo fuck yourself and stay away from my sister, you cretin.”

“I don’t think you know how to spell cretin,” I pointed out.

He snorted. “Thanks for the vote of confidence, sis. That’s what automatic spell check is for. And it’s a lot better than discussing my sister’s dick size preferences.”

I groaned and slid deeper into my seat, wishing I could disappear.

“I can’t believe we’re actually having this conversation right now.”

Theo breathed a quiet laugh.

“Just let us know if you have any more trouble. We’ve got your back.”

I ducked my head to hide a smile, feeling a rush of warmth all over.

Chapter Two

Theo

It took every ounce of willpower not to chuck Haley’s phone out the window when I saw that unsolicited dick pic she’d received. God knows I’d participated in my fair share of sexting over the years, but I never sent a picture that was unasked for and unwanted.

The thought of Haley Talbot kissing some guy made a feral heat bloom in my chest. I’d known her since she was eleven years old - a little mouse of a girl, hiding behind her books. But I caught her watching the world go by with those big brown eyes of hers. I heard her push back when Chase took his teasing a step too far.

I knew, without the shadow of a doubt, that if some dumb asshole dared to break Haley’s heart, I wouldn’t hesitate to break his damn legs.

Chase would probably take a swing at him, too, for that matter. He might be a lanky son of a bitch with a big mouth but I’d seen him throw a solid punch before.

By the time the Talbot cabin came into view, it was nearly midnight. It was an old-fashioned place with rough hewn pine logs and a dark green metal roof. Golden light emanated from the windows, casting the cabin in a warm glow against the inky sky overhead and the pitch-black forest that surrounded us.

Haley had dozed off during the drive, her chin dipped toward her chest. A stray lock of dark brown hair had come loose from her ponytail and brushed against her cheek. I fought the urge to tuck it behind her ear. When I parked the truck, I would have to turn off the heat eventually. I hated the thought of waking her up but I wasn’t about to leave her out in the cold all night.

“We’re here!” Chase declared, shoving his door open.

Haley startled awake with a sleepy frown. She rubbed her eyes and stifled a yawn.

“Come on,” I said, cupping her elbow. “The faster we get inside, the sooner you can get back to dreamland.”

She gave a small, tired smile and didn’t say a word of protest or pull away when I guided her out of the truck. Chase had already bounded up the driveway and disappeared inside the house, leaving our bags in the back of the truck.

The snow was thicker up here, pillowy and soft beneath my boots as I grabbed our luggage. Haley stood on tiptoe to reach for her bag, balancing her books under her other arm. But I scooped up the strap first and hooked it over my shoulder.

“I got it.”
