Chapter Seven

Rosie

As soon as I woke up with Jay’s arm draped around my waist and his face nuzzled into my hair, I panicked. I’d never had sex like that in my life. I was usually too preoccupied to relax and enjoy myself and my partner. But the way Jay had looked at me banished any thoughts of self-consciousness.

And I guess that spooked me.

What if the sex meant nothing to him? What if he thought he could touch me, kiss me, flirt with me around his buddies at the firehouse until they all knew I was getting railed by the Lieutenant?

So I ran.

I knew I couldn’t dodge Jay forever. I had to face him eventually, and sure enough, he marched into my office, looking just as delicious as the night before. It took every ounce of concentration to not think about the thick drag of his cock inside me. Or his lips on my skin. Or his big, calloused fingers, stroking me higher and higher…

Then the gossip started.

As I headed to Chief Wright’s office to deliver some paperwork, I passed Eddie Hackman in the hallway.

“Hey, Simmons,” he said. “Congratulations to you and Jay.”

I screeched to a stop, my face burning.

“For what?” I asked even though I had a feeling I already knew the answer.

“You two finally started dating. Jay said he asked you out last night after the Christmas party. It’s about damn time, too. You’ve been dancing around each other for ages.”

My mouth dropped open.

“Jay said what?”

Eddie frowned in confusion.

“I’m guessing that’s not what happened?”

I snapped my mouth shut. No, Jay didn’t ask me out. We did…other things instead but there was no way I would admit that to anyone.

Paperwork delivery forgotten, I went in search of Jay. I found him in the apparatus bay, checking the engine on one of the fire trucks.

“What the hell are you doing?” I demanded.

Jay raised his eyebrows and gestured to the truck.

“Engine repair. Why?”

“You’ve been telling people we’re dating.”

“Ah.” Jay rubbed the back of his neck and shrugged. “Yeah.”

I shook my head. “No, Jay. We’re not dating.”

“I mean, we could call it something else. Friends with benefits. The occasional booty call. But if you were worried about your reputation at work, I figured dating sounded more respectable.”

“Jay, I’m serious,” I hissed through my teeth.

He breathed a laugh and crossed his arms.

“So am I, sweetheart.”

“Don’t call me that. We’re at work.”
