Rage slammed through me, the side of me that I’d kept so well hidden over the years rearing its ugly head—again. My brain was in fight-or-flight mode, and unfortunately for everyone around me, I always chose fight.

“No,” Lorenzo barked out, grabbing my arm. It was his first mistake. He never should have touched me, not when my temper was at one hundred percent and ready to snap at any second. “We go down together. We do this right.”

I knew what he was saying, but that didn’t mean I had to like it. Every molecule of my being wanted to sprint down to those gates and throw my fist in the agent’s face, not stopping until you couldn’t recognize a single one of his features.

But Lorenzo was the boss. What he said went…on this occasion.

“Car is ready, boss,” Mateo called, appearing in the open front door.

Lorenzo pushed his shoulders back, glaring down at me. “Nowwe go.” His grip disappeared off my arm as he stepped back and led the way out of the open doors.

No one spoke as we piled into the SUV and drove down the driveway where a car with flashing lights was illuminating the big metal gates. For a moment, we all just sat there, staring at the solo man, shouting at us to get out of the car.

We had no idea what he was going to do or say, but we’d never find out by sitting here, so I pushed open the door, and jumped down out of the SUV. I strolled over to the gates like I didn’t have a care in the world, when inside I was a roaring fire ready to let loose and burn everything in its path.

“Agent Peters,” I greeted, staying at least five feet away. The gun at the back of my waistband pressed against my body, reminding me that it would only take a second to draw it and take one shot to end him.

“Where is she?” he roared, gripping on to the gate and shaking it.

“Where’s who?” I tilted my head, throwing a confused look on my face.

“I know she’s here!” He slammed his palm on the gate, wincing at the impact. “Her car is right there!” He spun around, pointing at a car parked across the street.

Fuck. Why didn’t I think about how she’d gotten here yesterday? I’d been so preoccupied with making sure she was okay and doing damage control with Lorenzo that it hadn’t even occurred to me.

“She’s safe,” Lorenzo said, stepping beside me, his demeanor deadly calm. We were putting on a united front. “Fromyou,” he tacked on the end.

“What the fuck did you just say?” Agent Peters threw himself at the gate, his frustration at not being able to get past it evident. The only way he’d get onto our property would be if he had a warrant, and I somehow didn’t think he had one, not with him being here all alone.

“He said,” I growled, stepping forward. I probably shouldn’t have put myself so close, but it was already taking everything in me not to inflict maximum pain possible on him. “She’s safe from you.” I sneered, looking him up and down. “You call yourself the good guys just because you have a badge, but both you and I know that only scum would hit his daughter…hispregnantdaughter.”

“Fuck you!” He rattled the bars again, only able to move them the barest of centimeters. There was no way he was getting past them. “Get her out here now. I’m taking her home!”

“No way in hell are we doing that,” Lorenzo barked back. “This is private property, I suggest you get off of it before we have to protect what is ours.” The veiled threat was loud and clear, but it was as if it hadn’t even registered.

“You can’t keep her locked in there forever.”

“Wanna bet on that, Agent?” I asked, a teasing lilt to my tone.

His attention smacked right to me, his eyes darker than the night sky. “It’s too late now anyway,” he said, his tone completely different. His lips lifted into a smug grin. “She already signed the papers.”

“You fucker.” I lunged, not caring that the metal gate was separating us. I’d get to him one way or another. I’d show him that he couldn’t mess with what was mine, and Navy and the baby, they were mine.

He laughed as my body collided with the metal, the sound manic as it echoed around us. “Are you trying to attack an FBI agent, Mr. Beretta?”

“You’re lucky this gate is between us,” I spat, my head mashed against the bars as I bared my teeth. “You’re not getting anywhere near her…or my baby.”

He shrugged one of his shoulders, acting like this was a normal conversation. And if I really thought about it, it should have been scary how quickly he went from angry to calm, but the mist had taken over, threatening to take all of my senses with it.

“Like I said, it’s too late now.”

“No, it’s not,” Romeo said from behind me. His footsteps neared, but I didn’t move my attention off of Agent Peters. “Not only did you coerce her to sign them, you don’t have permission from the father.”

“Father?” he spluttered. “He’ll never be anything but criminal scum.”

I growled deep in my chest, a warning that if he said another word, I’d climb over these gates and give him the opportunity to hit someone his own size. Only, I wouldn’t go down without a fight. I’d fight to the death if it meant protecting Navy.

Lorenzo had grabbed my shoulder, his fingers squeezing in warning. “Goodbye, Agent Peters,” Lorenzo ground out. His grip was tight, so tight it was sure to bruise, but I still didn’t move.
