I paced outside of Lorenzo’s office, waiting for him to call us in. I had no idea why I was so nervous; it wasn’t like it was me who had been brought here to be psychoanalyzed by the head of the family.

Turning my head, I glanced at Remy where he was sitting as cool as a cucumber.

How was he so calm?

He probably didn’t realize what was about to happen.

The door creaked open and Romeo appeared, his face a neutral mask of his usual pissed-off expression. “You can come in now.”

He stepped back, opening the door wider, and Remy and I walked in. Lorenzo was behind his desk, as usual, his power exuding out of him.

“Take a seat,” he said, standing up. He moved toward the sofas, and I knew it was a move to disarm us. It was a trick Dad had taught him to make people feel more comfortable. The more comfortable they were, the more likely they’d say something that they wouldn’t have if you were behind your desk.

I raised my brow at Lorenzo, letting him know that I knew exactly what he was doing, but he didn’t change his expression one bit.Thiswas the Mafia boss that everyone else saw. This was the man who struck terror into anyone who heard his name.

He held his hand out to Remy. “Lorenzo Beretta,” he said, his tone deeper than usual.

“Remy Barthon,” Remy replied, shaking his hand while his other hand held his trusty laptop. I didn’t think I’d ever seen him go anywhere without that thing.

Lorenzo sat on the sofa first with Romeo standing directly behind him.

“Sit,” I murmured to Remy as I lowered myself onto the sofa opposite Lorenzo. The leather creaked, the only sound in the room as we all stared at each other.

Lorenzo’s gaze batted back and forth between me and Remy, then finally landed on Remy as he asked, “So you’ve been helping my brother?”

“I have.” Remy sat up straight, his shoulders pushed back.

“With what kind of things?” Lorenzo asked, tilting his head to the side. I’d already filled him in on what Remy could do, but I guessed he wanted to hear it from the horse’s mouth.

Remy turned toward me, his gaze asking for permission to tell him, and with a quick dip of my head, he told him, “Tracking other organizations, finding intel on them, searching the dark web for anything we can use against…well…everybody.” He paused. “And of course, I found those guys.”

My jaw clenched at his words.

Lorenzo leaned forward, his forearms on his thighs. “What guys?”

“The ones who hurt your sister,” Remy stated, so easily, as if he was telling him the answer to simple math.

Lorenzo’s head whipped around to face me, his eyes narrowing. I’d left that detail out, hoping that once Lorenzo met him, he’d be able to see that Remy had already been helping not just me, but him too.

“I can find anything you need or want me to,” Remy started. “It’s better to know everything you can about everybody and be one step ahead than working from behind.”

“What’s that meant to mean?” Lorenzo asked, his features telling me that he was intrigued but also annoyed by what Remy had said.

Remy shuffled in his seat, and I could feel his nerves start to appear. “The Enterprise for example.” He opened his laptop. “I did a thirty-minute search before I came here and I found that one of the members is going into business with a convicted pedophile.” He cleared his throat, bringing up several windows on his screen. “Now…it’s up to each man who he wants to associate with, but by associating with him.” He spun his laptop around so that Lorenzo could see. “It means he’ll be watched more closely, which in turn means you’ll be watched more closely. Everything has a push and pull, every move has a countermove, and right now, this move isn’t good for business.”

Lorenzo pursed his lips as he leaned back on the sofa, his silence echoing around us all. I opened my mouth, about to tell him that this was just the tip of the iceberg when it came to what Remy could do for us, but knocks at Lorenzo’s office door had me pausing.

No one made a move to answer it. Partly because everyone knew not to disturb Lorenzo when he was in a meeting, but also because they were all out. Ma and Sofia had gone somewhere with Christian, Aida was at the piano bar with Mateo. So that only left everyone in this room and—

“Dante?” Her voice echoed through the door. “Are you in there, Dante?”

My stare met Lorenzo’s. I knew she wasn’t allowed in here, but I also knew that we were in the middle of an important meeting, so I couldn’t just get up and leave.

“Where does your loyalty lie?” Lorenzo asked Remy, acting as if Navy wasn’t on the other side of the door.

Remy’s head turned to face me. “With Dante.” It was the right answer, but also the wrong one too. He needed to be loyal to Lorenzo, but Remy was telling the truth, and if the slight tilt of Lorenzo’s head was anything to go by, then he appreciated it.

“Dante!” Navy was louder this time, her knocking faster. “I know you’re in there.”
