“It was.”

I stared up at him, taking the strength that he was silently giving me.

“Well, hot damn, if it isn’t my best friend who abandoned me along with her Mafia boyfriend.” I winced at the sound of Zara’s voice but couldn’t stop my grin from widening. “You guys wanna get a room to finish that off or…”

“Zara,” I whispered, turning around but feeling Dante’s hands still on me. He wasn’t ready to let me go yet, and I didn’t want him to either.

Her brows rose as she cocked her hip out, trying to give me the sternest look she could muster. “So youarealive, then?”

“I’m alive.”

Her eyes narrowed on me, but she couldn’t keep it up for long. She threw herself at me, causing me to stumble back, and I was glad that Dante was there to keep me upright.

“Oof,” I grunted, wrapping my arms around her as she squeezed me as tight as she could.

“I missed you,” she murmured, only for me to hear. I nodded, silently telling her that I missed her too.

The bell rang at that moment, telling all of the students that it was time to enter the building. Zara pulled away but only took one step back. We didn’t have any classes together until this afternoon, so I was going to take my fill of her while I could.

“I’ll see you later?” I told Dante, turning to face him.

“I’ll be here,” he said, squeezing his hand on my waist, then placing a kiss on my lips. This one was the complete opposite to the one he’d just given me though. It was quick, but still a reminder of what I’d be missing while I was at school.

I took a step back, feeling my heart race like crazy in my chest. I didn’t look away from him, not until I was standing beside Zara.

“Go,” he mouthed.

I nodded, knowing I needed to listen to him otherwise I’d never go inside the building. I hooked my arm through Zara’s, inhaled a deep breath to calm myself, and walked away from him. I could still hear his engine as we entered into the school hallway and swore I heard a wheelspin when the doors closed shut behind me.

“Meet you in the bathroom at lunch?” Zara asked as we came to the door of my first class.

“I’ll be there,” I told her, then headed inside.

The morning went by far too quickly but also dragged at the same time. All of the other students had caught up to where I was in my work, so now I had to pay as much attention as possible to the teacher at the front of the class.

Whispers and rumors spread around me, gazes burning into my back and making me feel like I was on fire. So as soon as the bell rang for lunch, I practically sprinted to the bathroom to get away from them all.

Zara was already waiting for me, and as soon as I stepped inside, she barred the door, just like she had all of those months ago when I took the pregnancy test.

She raised a brow at me. “Well then, tell me what happened.”

I sucked in a breath, wondering where to start from. I needed her to understand everything that had happened, so I picked up from the last time I’d seen her, getting into my car to go home and seeing Miriam there.

I didn’t leave a single thing out, apologizing throughout that I’d effectively ghosted her over the last couple of months.

“Am I ever going to see photos of this Mafia baby or what?” Zara asked, puffing out a breath as she stared in the bathroom mirror.

“You know I’m sorry for not contacting you, right?” I told her, moving to the opposite wall and leaning against. My attention didn’t move off if her as she pulled herself up onto the counter next to the sink. She had no plans of going to her class once lunch was over, and neither did I. This was the only time we’d be able to catch up.

“Yeah yeah, you already said that.” She waved her arm in the air, but I could see the hurt shining in her eyes.

I opened my mouth, about to say…I had no idea what I was going to say, so instead, I pulled out the cell that Dante had given me a couple of weeks ago and told her, “Put your number in here,” as I handed it to her. “Then take a look at the photos.”

I stepped back, deciding to place my bag on the floor and sit on it as she saved her number, then pulled up the photos app.

“Oh my God, he’s so cute.” She lifted the cell closer to her face, zooming in on the million photos I’d taken of Dario. “He’s so tiny and…cute.” Her fingers swiped across the screen, taking in each photo but then suddenly stopped. “What’s this, then, huh?” Her tone changed. Gone was the cute obsessed vibe and in its place something more sinister. “Damn, he’s ripped.” Her stare met mine as she bounced her brows up and down on her forehead. “And tan.”

I shot forward, realizing that she’d gotten to the ones I’d taken of Dante, and yanked my cell out of her hand.
