“Do I look stupid to you?” he snapped back, not waiting for my answer as he slammed his car door shut. He reversed off the drive and put his window down. “Follow me, we’ll get there in half the time.” Lights flashed as he peeled away from the curb.

I hated the fact that we were colluding with the FBI, especially after we’d been on their hit list since before I could remember. But this was a necessity. I’d do anything to make sure that Navy and Dario were safe, even if it meant getting help from the enemy.

The forty-minute drive only took us twenty thanks to his sirens, and as soon as we were only one street away, he turned them off, but didn’t slow down.

The tires squealed as we came to a stop outside of the warehouse. Workers were letting themselves in several buildings on either side, their attention moving to the SUV. I was the first one out, my gun already drawn, followed by Lorenzo, Romeo, and Christian. Agent Peters took up the rear, his blue jacket with the letters FBI written on the back silently telling people that it was okay.

“We need a plan,” Peters said.

“Yeah, get in, get Navy and Dario, then kill every fucker in there.”

“That’s not a plan.”

I shrugged, waiting for Romeo to use the bolt cutters to get through the lock on the metal door. “Sounds like a perfect plan to me.”

Peters opened his mouth, but there was no time for him to answer because Romeo had cut through the lock and was heading inside.

Darkness enveloped us as we darted inside, then a second later, a flashlight appeared. I guessed the FBI were prepared for any situation after all.

“Split up,” Lorenzo said. “Peters, you’re with us.” He pointed at me and Romeo. “You two go that way.”

I nodded, not giving him words as an answer as Romeo and I sprinted down the right side of the long hallway.

Several doors were open, small rooms bathed in more darkness. The air was freezing cold, silence enveloping us, until, “Did you hear that?” Romeo asked.

We halted in the middle of the hallway lined on both sides with more doors than I could count. It looked like an old damn prison.

“Hear wh—”

Cries rang out…baby cries. Coming from the opposite direction.

A shot fired, and then another one, the cries getting louder. I spun around, about to head toward them but a voice shouted out, “We have Dario.” I caught the glimpse of a flashlight, then heard footsteps. “I’m taking him outside.”

Agent Peters’ voice was closer, and as he stood near the door we’d come in, I could see him holding my son, his gun at his side.

His gaze met mine, something shining behind his eyes that I hadn’t seen this entire time I’d been at his house. He cared. He fuckin’ cared yet he’d pushed Navy away in the worst way possible. We were more alike than I wanted to admit.

“Find Navy,” he demanded. “Find her and do what you have to.”

Was he giving me the go-ahead to kill any motherfucker I came across? I didn’t need it, but at least it’d mean I wouldn’t end up locked in a cell. I hoped.

I clipped my head in a nod, then spun back around, racing down the hallway as we searched each room. Shouts from the other side of the hallway echoed down to us as they shouted “all clear.” There was only one door left. We were at the end of the road, my hopes for finding Navy dissipating.

And then I kicked open the door.

“Don’t take another step,” a woman’s voice demanded.

The room was lit up like the Fourth of July, exposing everything to me.

Miriam—that was what Agent Peters had called her—was standing behind Navy, a knife at her throat, blood trickling from beneath it.

“Dario,” Navy whispered, tears rolling down her cheeks. She was barely clothed, her T-shirt ripped, and nothing on her legs.

“He’s safe,” Romeo said from beside me.

She nodded, more tears falling as her shoulders slumped. She was ready to take whatever Miriam was doing to her now that she knew our son was safe, but there was no way in hell I was going to stand here and watch.

I stepped forward.
