The door to the office opened, catching our attention, and Liam and Jo walked in. He had a relaxed look on his face, holding hands with his wife, but when he saw me in front of Dmitriy the look disappeared and his face went dark.

“What’s going on?”

“The lawyer ditched her security and was accosted outside. She is trying to say she is not required to have security during her travel because it is not considered work,” Dmitriy growled.

Liam’s eyes flashed and he marched over. Dmitriy was scary in a more in your face way. Liam’s dark glare made me think he wouldn’t just kill me, he’d draw it out and make it hurt. I swallowed hard, keeping my eyes locked on his.

“I told you when you started that security was required. You knew the rules. You’ve been working here long enough to understand what’s expected. You deliberately forsaking your security puts not only you at risk but this entire business. You have no idea what my enemies would do to get you to talk. You know too damn much to be so cavalier.” He shifted his gaze around the room, scowling. “Where the fuck is Jaime? He was supposed to be watching her.”

Dread dumped into my system. I didn’t want to see Jaime or get him involved. Shaking my head quickly, I pushed to my feet.

“He wasn’t there. I manipulated someone into leaving me alone but it wasn’t Jaime. You can yell at me all you’d like but it would be unfair to take it out on him.”

Liam shot me a look that I knew really well. My father used to give me that look. It was the ‘keep talking and face the consequences look’.

“Jaime is your security detail. Give me one good reason why he wasn’t with you.”

Shit.

Nothing that I could say at that moment would help me. I wasn’t going to tell Liam O’Connor that I was avoiding Jaime because we had a one night stand and he was pissed that I didn’t want a relationship with him. A flush worked its way up my cheeks and I shot Jo a panicked look. She was the only person who might be able to calm Liam down but she looked just as flustered as I was.

Liam made an irritated noise. “Who was it that you manipulated?”

Despite the temperature in the room, I was starting to sweat under both Liam and Dmitriy’s angry attention. I didn’t want to answer him. I didn’t want to get James into trouble either.

When I wouldn’t open my mouth to speak, Dmitriy growled and pulled out his phone, putting it to his ear.

“I want Jaime and whoever brought the lawyer home last night in my office. Now.”

Without thinking about it, I started twisting my fingers nervously like I used to when I was younger. This wasn’t what I wanted. I just wanted to come to work on my own and avoid the awkwardness. Instead, I was dragging person after person into my mess. I was making a lot of enemies by making a brash decision to lie to security. And I probably couldn’t even argue with it. The one day I ditched my security I was approached on the street and manhandled. My arm still hurt from where the man had gripped me so roughly.

The door to the office swung open a few moments later, two very confused men walking in. When Jaime’s gaze landed on me, his brow furrowed but he looked away quickly. My heart sank at his reaction. I had no allies here anymore.

“One of you want to tell me why Sloan came into work alone today?” Liam snapped.

James’s eyebrows shot up and he swung to face me for a second before looking back at Liam.

“She said she was driving herself. I put her name on the list in the garage, did they not let her in?”

At this point I wanted to find a rock big enough for me to crawl under.

“She lied.”

James’s face went dark and when he turned to face me again, the betrayal was plain across his face. I dropped my gaze to avoid it, frowning at the floor.

“I’m sorry, Liam. I never considered that she’d be the type to lie. It won’t happen again.”

“Why were you even with her in the first place? Where the fuck was Jaime?”

Jaime was still silent at this point but I couldn’t force myself to look up at him. I never felt more unprofessional in my life and the shame was weighing down hard on me.

“He said he needed a break so we switched jobs for the night so he wouldn’t have to drive around all night. I took Rebecca home and he took Jo–”

The room went suddenly quiet and when I finally managed to summon the nerve to look up, I was shocked to my core. The fury painted across Liam’s features was dark and twisted. I didn’t know where he produced the gun from but he had it pointed at Jaime, his lip lifted into a deep snarl.

“I told you to stay the fuck away from my wife.”
