His voice was barely above a whisper but the promise was sincere and determined and a sob wrenched from me without my permission. Jaime slowly pulled me into his arms and held me against him, letting me cry for the first time in a really long time. He never spoke, he just wrapped his arms around me and gave me the time I needed to pull myself back together.

As much asI wanted to spend the rest of the day in the safety of Jaime’s arms, I had to get back to work eventually. Jaime took up his old spot in the chair by the door and at least with him I didn’t feel like I was being babysat. He played on his phone, relaxing in his seat while I got my work done. The farthest he strayed was to meet someone at the elevators who brought us our lunch. A familiar scent hit my nose and my stomach growled loudly.

“Please tell me that’s what I think it is.”

He smiled. “I figured we could both use some comfort food.” He placed the wrapped up sandwich on my desk and I immediately stopped what I was doing to eat it. I didn’t want to wait too long and have it go cold. It would be a travesty.

I groaned at my first bite, the delicious warmth working its way to my middle. I didn’t realize how cold I felt until I started on this little treat.

I was in the middle of my next bite when I noticed Jaime staring at me. I paused, lifting an eyebrow at him.

“What?”

He shook his head slowly but he hadn’t even touched his sandwich yet and there was a heated look in his eyes that made my stomach clench and my thighs squeeze together. I knew what that look would lead to now and a part of me wanted to let it happen. After the shitshow this morning, I wanted the escape.

“Jaime…”

He sucked in a sharp breath, his brows furrowing. “Don’t.”

I frowned. “What?”

“Don’t say my name like that. I’m trying to be good here.”

Heat dumped into my system, settling low in my belly. Even after all the drama, he still wanted me and because I knew how good it was with him, I had to clench my thighs together to ease the ache that was pulsing between my legs. The heated look turned smoldering and he pushed to his feet, stalking closer. Only the desk stopped him from eliminating the distance between us.

Leaning one hand on the desk, he reached for me, taking my chin and leaning so close that his lips brushed against mine as he spoke.

“Bex, you keep looking at me like that and I’m not gonna be able to control myself. I may have been drunk off my ass but I remember every detail of that night and I’d do some messed up shit to experience it again. Even seducing you after you asked me not to.”

A shiver rolled up my spine and I gasped. The man had a way with words that left me panting and my panties wet. I can’t remember a time I’ve ever been so drawn in by a man. Then again, I’ve never been with a man like Jaime.

When I didn’t respond, a slow grin passed over his face. He dipped his head, pressing his lips softly to mine for the briefest moment before pulling away. Walking backwards, his grin turned wicked when I swayed for a minute.

The ding of the elevator broke through the sexual tension and I blinked rapidly. Jaime went to work, going to see who was coming to visit while I pulled myself together. Seriously, get it together. One night with that man does not get rid of all the reasons I put those rules into place. This morning was a clear example of why I should stay away from him.

ChapterTwenty-Four

“Didthe man who attacked you give you a name or anything?”

I’d been deep in the middle of checking over the licenses that were set up when the big three first started on this building. I didn’t trust the last counsel to have done everything correctly and I didn’t want it coming back to bite us that we were missing a license and the whole project could be in jeopardy.

“What?”

My eyes were glued to the paperwork in front of me but when he didn’t respond, I looked up at him. He had an amused look on his face, a grin pulling at his lips. When my brow furrowed, he chuckled.

“I’ve been around Liam enough to know better than to ask questions when you aren’t paying attention. You look cute when you’re scowling at paperwork though.”

My face flushed and I pursed my lips to hide my embarrassment. “What did you need, Jaime?”

He laughed outright at the exasperation in my tone. The flirting needed to stop but if I pointed it out he might bring up how I was practically panting over him kissing me earlier so I kept my mouth shut, shooting him a dry look.

“I asked if the man who attacked you gave you a name. Or any information at all.”

My brows furrowed. “Nothing concrete. Just that his name was Terence and that Mr. O’Connor was screwing him over. Why?”

He lifted a shoulder carelessly and turned his attention back to his phone. I knew I shouldn’t be telling him how to do his job but given that he was already on Liam’s shit list, I worried about him getting into more trouble and somehow managing to get himself killed.
