My heart skipped a beat at his soft words and I almost asked him to pull over so I could show him just how much he meant to me. It was only the worry that it’d start to snow again before we got back that made me bite my tongue. I kept my eyes on the road and we drove in comfortable silence, only the soft music of the radio playing in the background.

“So what’d you think of the wedding?”

I made a face. “I guess it was fine.”

Because he knew it would bother me, he didn’t glance my way. He kept his focus on the road while he spoke to me.

“You guess?”

Nodding, I sat straighter. I wasn’t sure I wanted to have this conversation right now, not when things were going so well between us, but I didn’t want to dismiss him either.

“I don’t like the idea of weddings. It seems like a waste of money.”

He pursed his lips. “Yeah, but the food is usually really good.”

Surprised, I laughed. “Is food all you think about?”

A slow grin pulled at his lips. “Not the only thing, no.” It was low and suggestive and I felt warmth settle into my skin. Damn that man, he could set me off with only a few words.

Determined not to let him get to me, I narrowed my eyes at him. “Are you telling me you’d want to have a wedding just for the food?”

He lifted a shoulder. “I’m not really set on one thing. I went to Jo and Liam’s wedding and it was exhausting but the food was amazing. I actually took home leftovers when no one was looking.”

I couldn’t stop laughing and he grinned at me when he stopped at a red light. “I’m serious! They had filet mignon, lobster, and oysters.” I wrinkled my nose at that but he kept going. “You should’ve seen the cake, it was massive.”

My brow furrowed. “I guess I never saw Jo as the lavish wedding type.”

He snorted. “She’s not. She absolutely hated it. Liam’s mom was the one who planned everything. She said it was important to make a statement. Pretty sure Jo wanted something on the beach with just her and Liam and a justice of the peace.”

Tipping my head, I considered it. It sounded better than putting on a puffy white dress and pretending you’re having fun while showing off your wealth to your friends and family.

“I wouldn’t be opposed to that.”

I realized that I spoke out loud and flushed but he only smiled and kissed the back of my hand before turning his attention back to the road.

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

My heart skipped a beat or ten and I spent the rest of the drive sneaking looks at him to see if he was serious. The condo parking lot was full so we parked down the block. The icy wind stole my breath away and I grimaced when it ripped through the thin layers of my bridesmaid dress. Stupid thing was not meant for the winter and my teeth were chattering by the time we made it back. Jaime had given me his tux jacket on top of mine to keep me warm so he wasn’t any better. He held me against him even after we got inside, rubbing my arms in the elevator to try and get the warmth back.

When we stepped up to my apartment door, I touched it to put in the code like normal, jerking my hand away when the door pushed open on its own. I shot Jaime a wide eyed look and he grabbed my arm, yanking me behind him and pulling out his weapon.

“Bex, grab my phone and call for backup. Now.”

ChapterThirty

I knew betterthan to argue with him, he was the security expert, not me. Reaching into his pocket, I pulled out his phone, swiping it open and pulling up his contacts. There was a long list of names, only a few of which I recognized. It was the conversation in Liam’s office the other day that made the decision for me. I selected Jo’s name, putting it to my ear.

While I made the phone call, Jaime slowly pushed inside my condo. I followed behind him, not willing to wait in the hall, stopping only when he nudged me against a wall and whispered at me to stay put. Jo didn’t answer the first time. I called again immediately, each ring feeling like a lifetime as I silently pleaded with her to pick up. As Jaime prowled forward towards my room, I shivered against the wall, my eyes darting around anxiously.

“Jaime? What’s wrong?”

“Hey, it’s me.”

She paused. “Rebecca? Why are you calling on Jaime’s phone? I gave you my number the other day.”

“Not important. We think someone broke into my condo and Jaime said to call for backup. Can you help?”

She sucked in a sharp breath. “On it. Is there anyone there? Where’s Jaime?”
