My brow furrowed. I don't remember staying–

My mouth fell open and I jerked to face him. I’d been too drunk to really pay attention at the time but I did remember going up a flight of stairs to get to the room Jaime dragged me in the first time we were together. That’s where we were now and Jaime had a shit eating grin on his face. My face burned and I tossed a pillow at him, ducking my head. He laughed outright but when he grunted, I hurried over and started fussing over him again.

“You’re incorrigible.”

He chuckled. “You like it.”

Tucking him in, I smiled softly. “Maybe a little.”

He tugged lightly on my arm, drawing me closer. No matter how much he flirted with me, I wasn’t willing to do anything… strenuous, but that didn’t stop him from trying. He nipped at me when I refused to do more than sip at his lips and when I drew away from him, he tried to follow me.

“Rebecca!”

Jerking away, I whipped my head around. I’ve never heard Jo sound so distraught before. She burst into the room, tears streaming down her cheeks, pale and shaking. My eyebrows flew up and I raced toward her, catching her when she nearly collapsed. Carefully, I moved her to sit on the edge of the bed. She was wailing and I couldn’t get a word in edgewise. It was Jaime who eventually got her talking. He pushed himself up to comfort her and we both started yelling at him immediately. Putting his hands up in surrender, he leaned back with a grimace.

“What do you expect me to do when she’s screaming like that?”

Shaking my head, I turned back to Jo, putting my hand on her shoulder. “What happened?”

Between gasping sobs, she finally forced the words out. “Liam’s been arrested.”

My brow furrowed. “On what charges?”

She shook her head helplessly. “I don’t know! They won’t talk to me! They just stopped us on the street and dragged him away!”

Suspicion flowed through me. They couldn’t drag someone away without a reason. I was aware that Liam was preparing to take on my father but he hadn’t done anything outright yet. My mind shifted back to the day he tried to take me.

He wants to steal my daughter from me, I’ll steal his whole life from him.He wanted to hurt Liam and he never got a chance to do it by hurting Jaime. Since I was still with Liam’s family and under his protection, he could be retaliating the easiest way he knew how.

“I’ll handle it. I need you to stay here and watch Jaime.”

He protested immediately. “No way! You aren’t going anywhere!”

Shooting him a narrow eyed look, I tightened my grip on Jo’s hands. “Who was with you when this happened?”

Her chin trembled. “James and Adam. James was taken in too. Adam brought me home.”

I nodded. “Okay. Stay here. I’m gonna send up security just in case but I don’t want you to worry. I’ll handle it, okay? You watch Jaime. Make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid like try and follow.”

Her eyes searched mine before she sucked in a deep breath and nodded once. “Okay. Thank you, Rebecca.”

Patting her hand, I released her and turned to Jaime. He was glaring at me, obviously unhappy, and when I leaned in to kiss his cheek, he tried to grab me and force me to stay. Gently I pulled his hands out of my hair. Unlike my uncle, he didn’t actually want to hurt me and released me when I tugged.

“Bex…”

“It’s okay. I’m not going without backup. I’ll call Dmitriy and ask for security. I promise, I’ll be safe. They’re trying to go through the legal system, Jaime. If they want to do that, they’re going to have to go through me. Stay here. I can only do this if I know you’re going to be okay.”

I saw the warring emotions on his face but he relented and after a quick kiss he released me. “Ask for Viktor and Vlad. No one is getting past those assholes. And bring your damn gun.”

A smile tugged at my lips. “Yes, sir.”

It stunned him enough to pull a grin out of him before I walked away. My father is an idiot if he thinks I wasn’t prepared for something like this. I knew who I was working for when I started. It’s time to show him just how much he underestimated me.

I knewthey’d want to fast track Liam’s trial. He’s got a big name and with people like that, they wanted to charge them as quickly as possible so people like me couldn’t swoop in and fix things. That’s why it took days, not months, to get Liam’s trial and since I was backing the decision, there was no resistance on making things happen quickly.

Stepping into the courthouse, I didn’t feel an ounce of nerves. I didn’t stay up late studying and work my ass off to be bad at my job. I thrived under the pressure and I had a very solid case. There was no reason to be nervous. I knew exactly what they’d say and I was prepared for it.
