“Hey, baby.”

I pressed my face to his chest, melting against him. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“You didn’t. I was only dozing. Shit dream anyway.”

“Me too.”

I felt him kiss the top of my head and I tipped my chin up. He dipped lower, kissing me gently. Pulling away, he searched my face.

“How are you feeling?”

I shrugged, flinching a little. “I’m sore and the cuts don’t feel great but it could be worse so I’m okay.”

I felt his whole body relaxed and he pulled me back against him, cupping the back of my head. He didn’t say anything, just held me. I wanted to give him a chance to relax before I started berating him with the massive amount of questions I had.

I was starting to doze off again, James’s body heat and steady heartbeat relaxing me, when someone knocked on the door. He kissed the top of my head and pulled away, dragging himself out of bed. I sat up, rubbing my eyes. While James answered the door, I finally got a good look around. The room itself was large but pretty simple. There were two tall windows behind the bed, the sun streaming through them. Two doors on the left side of the room, one was part way open, giving me a glimpse of the bathroom, the other I had to assume the other was a closet given that there weren’t any other dressers in here. There was a fireplace against the wall at the foot of the bed, one shelf of books by the door, and that was it. Even the bedding was simple, a deep forest green comforter and matching sheets. Compared to my apartment, James’s room was barren. My eyes were wide, my mouth open. Talk about opposites attract.

He came back into the room, frowning at me. “What?”

“How do you live like this?”

His eyebrows jumped up and he looked around. “Like what?”

I squeaked, gesturing to the room. The very empty room. He didn’t even have a computer or a TV in here. He gave me a funny look, waiting for me to elaborate.

“You have no decorations, nothing on the walls, nothing at all. Don’t you have any hobbies?”

He chuckled, climbing back into bed and laying down next to me. “I like to work out and I like to work. I don’t need a lot of decorations.”

“A lot? You don’t have any!”

He tugged me lightly until I laid back down, curled against him. “Well, why don’t you decorate it then. I’m sure you can think of better things than me. I like your place, it’s got character.”

I snorted. “You wouldn’t be able to handle my kind of decorations. I’d have to start off incredibly slow so I don’t overwhelm you with a transition from this barren wasteland.”

He grinned, his fingers stroking my shoulder. “I guess you’ll have to stick around for a while then.”

I tipped my chin, glancing up at him. He looked different here. There was an edge to him, like he was always on work mode and not fully relaxed. I shifted myself up, leaning over him so I could kiss him. He lifted his head so I didn’t have to lean as far. When I stroked my tongue along his bottom lip, he growled, his hand coming up to cup my head. I crawled closer, refusing to break the kiss when he leaned back. His free hand slid up to my hip, then around, grabbing a handful of my butt. I fought a grin, nipping at his bottom lip. I was letting my fingers trail down his chest when someone knocked on his door again.

I pulled away, letting out a sigh. “No wonder you can’t relax here. Do you ever get five minutes to yourself?”

He chuckled. “Not normally. I never minded before now. I like to keep busy.”

When he tried to roll off the bed, I caught his shoulder, pulling him back. I dipped my head, capturing his lips again. I was getting really brave with him, nipping a little harder on his lip when he tried to get up again. He licked his lip, nursing the sting before he lunged at me, knocking me onto my back.

His hands dragged into my hair, holding me still as he rolled his hips against mine. I gasped, wrapping my legs around him. The knock came again, louder this time and we broke apart, breathing hard. Damn him and his workaholic tendencies because he pecked my lips before crawling off the bed again. I took great pleasure in the fact that he had to readjust to hide his erection though, his gait stiff.

He poked his head out the door, chatting with whoever was out there but I didn’t bother listening. I rolled back over, burying my face in his pillow. I was really hoping for a distraction so I didn’t have to come back to reality and think about last night.

ChapterSixteen

The bed dippedand I peeked out. Jo sat on the edge, looking concerned. I wiggled my fingers at her and she relaxed a little.

“When you came in last night, you looked really pale. I was worried about you.”

I sucked in a breath, pulling myself up and crossing my legs. I was grouchy, mostly due to lack of coffee and the constant interruptions, but Jo was being kind and I didn’t want to be an ass to her.

“I’m okay. A little sore. I’m trying not to think about it, it just makes me feel panicky.”
