It took a second for me to figure out how, but eventually I had a recording for Liam on his desktop. After that, we slowed it down and zoomed in as much as we could to get pictures of different people. It was difficult, it was pretty late when it happened so a lot of the faces were shadowed or the video wasn’t good enough to capture it. I did manage to get a few though. On the last one, I paused.

“Wait… I know him…”

Jo tilted her head, frowning at the picture. “You do? From where? I don’t recognize him.”

I stared at the photo, trying to think back. When I finally figured it out, my blood ran cold. “Oh my god.”

“What? What?” Jo’s gaze bounced between the screen and my face.

“That guy was at the convention. He was trying to get into my room when my friends and I went to grab my stuff to check out. We thought he had the wrong room or something, he ran away before we had the chance to ask…”

Jo blanched. “If he was at your hotel, then…”

“He could be the one of the guys who broke into my apartment.”

We both seemed to realize it at the same time and we stared at each other, horrified. James has been looking in the wrong place. I knew it seemed too extreme for Kyle to break into my apartment. But why would someone who’s involved with Liam and James’s guys be coming after me? Jo must’ve thought the same thing because she was frowning hard.

“We need someone to tell us who this guy is because I don’t get why he would be after you. You weren’t even hanging out with us until the convention.”

At first, I tried to call James. He was directly involved in all this, he would be able to piece together what we couldn’t, but he didn’t answer. I tried texting him and his only response was ‘I’m working, I’ll talk to you later.’ It stung a little, it wasn’t like I was messaging him just for fun.

Jo tried calling Liam instead. He answered on the first ring but couldn’t get back right away to look at the picture.

“Who else can we ask?”

I couldn’t hear his voice on the other end but she nodded, acknowledging him before she hung up. She dialed another number immediately.

“Hey, Jaime? Can you meet me in Liam’s office? I need you to look at something for me.”

He jogged in a couple minutes later, a frown on his face. “You sounded serious. What’s up?”

“I asked Elizabeth to try to get that video that Liam wanted from that fight the other night. We managed to find it and we have some pictures but one of them looks familiar to Elizabeth. She said he tried to get into her hotel room at the convention but ran off before she could speak to him. Can you look and tell me if you recognize him? Liam won’t be home until later and it feels important.”

He stepped around the desk, shooting Jo a confused look. He didn’t quite believe her but he did a double take once he saw the photo.

“Holy shit. That’s Clyde Harrington.”

We both waited for him to continue but he was too busy scrolling through the video.

“Jaime!”

He jerked back, surprised. “What? Oh, sorry. He’s the son of one of the motorcycle gang leaders that was causing trouble a little while back. James said he dealt with them…” He lost focus again, rewinding the video to watch it through. Jo had to smack him in the chest with the back of her hand. “Ouch! Geez, I’m just trying to see if there were other people there or if it was just him.”

“Why does that matter? And what would he want with Elizabeth?”

Jaime frowned. “What?”

Jo rolled her eyes so hard it looked painful. “Seriously, are you even listening? This guy was trying to get into Elizabeth’s room at the convention. Why would a motorcycle gang member be trying to break into her room?”

Jaime backed away, leaning against the bookshelves behind him as he thought about it. The pensive look on his face was out of place. He normally looked so upbeat, even when his friends were teasing him. When he took too long, Jo sighed loudly.

“Okay, look, I’ve got a theory but I don’t want to freak people out if I’m wrong so let me think about it for a minute. I’m not Liam, I don’t do this kind of shit often. I’m in the field, not behind the desk.”

I grabbed his hand, squeezing it lightly. “I think James is looking in the wrong place for the person who broke into my apartment. I need to know if this guy might’ve been involved or not.”

Jaime grimaced. “Potentially. If James somehow didn’t finish the job like he was supposed to when he dealt with the gang the first time, they could be looking for revenge. If they saw him with you, you might be a target. But that’s a long shot at best. They would’ve had to have been following him for a while to know you were someone important to him. You guys weren’t together for a while and it was less than twenty four hours after you got back together that whoever you saw was trying to get into your hotel room.”

“I know what I saw, Jaime. It was him.”
