“Probably worth it though, right?”

She hesitated and Carter laughed again as he turned on the TV.

“That look answered my question. Go catch some winks, buddy.”

Waving, she went down the hallway and turned into her bedroom after a quick stop in the bathroom. She dragged her school bag to her bed, took out a file folder of work, but her phone sitting on the end table was too tempting. Almost as if she had to talk to Dakota to make sure turning down Carter had been the right decision.

Of course it’s the right decision. She and Carter weren’t meant to be more than friends.

Grabbing the phone, she shot off a quick text.

Are you as tired as I am?

Before she could put the phone down and pretend to do school work, a message dinged.

Yes. No regrets though.

Well, that sent a warm fuzzy through her.

The phone vibrated in her hand, signaling an actual call and she settled into the pillows on her bed.

“Hi.”

“Hi. Were you hoping for a quick series of texts and to be done with me?” Dakota’s voice was low and scratchy as if he’d been in relaxation mode. Picturing him in relaxation mode made her want to race over to his house and join him.

But she wasn’t going to do that. Not on another school night. Not when she was already behind on sleep.

“Yes,” she said. “This phone call is super inconvenient.”

His laugh filled her ear and that school night speech lost some of its zing. “Sorry to be such a pest, but Saturday is so far away, Leah. I don’t think I can wait that long to see you again.”

More zing circling the drain.

“It’s Thursday night. Saturday is around the corner.” She impressed herself with her faux aloofness.

“Not in any rush to see me then?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Ah-HA! I knew it.” The triumph in his deep voice was hysterical. “What do you say to a Friday afternoon hike after school then dinner then… whatever.”

“Could you specify thewhateverpart? I want to know what I’m signing up for.”

“Leah.”

“Dakota.”

A rush of breath shot from the phone. “I’m not going to lie to you.Whatevermost likely entails a horizontal adventure since we—well,Ianyway—had so much fun on the last one.”

“I had fun too,” Leah said, “but maybe we should try for a vertical adventure. You know, up the challenge.”

Not a sound came from her phone.

“Dakota?”

“Y-yes. I was just… I was just picturing that suggestion.”

“And it excited you?”
