“…and remember my sentimental friend that a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.” The Wizard of Oz

Iwas born under a harvest moon in the back of a tour bus to a wild woman and a magic man. When the spell of the tour cleared and the 30-something-year-old rock star saw he had a 17-year-old groupie with his baby, he conjured up lawyers. They waved a stack of cash and made the wild woman and his harvest moon baby disappear.

Twenty thousand dollars seemed as big as a lottery win to the young high school dropout, only to find that the baby grew like a weed and needed so much more.

Still, the wild woman was determined to keep her harvest baby, but every door closed on them. Until one day, they walked into Crescent Moon Bakery a few years later. She met a middle-aged man who gave her harvest baby a free moon-shaped cookie and offered them the trailer out back. The wild woman took his genuine kindness as a sign. She sat her harvest baby in the Crescent Moon Bakery the next day and never returned. That was how Agata and Darek Sokol came to be myawesome parents. Even though I’m twenty-two, in my heart, I’m seventeen because my life started at five years old.

My birth mom’s name is Nora Winkley. I haven’t looked her up because she made her choice. Dad didn’t sign the birth certificate, though every once in a while, someone would tell me I looked like the famous lead singer, Justus Black. My birth mom used to say the same from what I remember of her. I’d seen his picture online. He was tall and slim to my curvy five-seven. Our only similarities were his jet-black hair, a rare blue color in his big wide-set eyes that looked purple in the light, and naturally full lips that looked better now that I’d grown into them. I wasn’t bitter about my birth parents. In my rare memories of the time before, I know that Nora had given me a talent for knitting because she made our clothes. My birth dad may have given me the ability to hum in tune. That was what I’d been doing the last hour, humming in tune and knitting a new dress.

“What’s the name of that song you’re humming?” Dad asked.
